Odisha Honeymoon: Romantic Routes and Stays
- Odisha honeymoon
- Puri
- Chilika
- Konark
An Odisha honeymoon suits couples who want culture, quiet beaches and nature without crowds: Puri's beaches and temple town, the Sun Temple at Konark, Chilika lake's dolphins and Bhitarkanika's mangroves. Here is how to choose the month, the stays, the moments worth booking and the budget levers.
An Odisha honeymoon suits couples who want culture, quiet beaches and nature without crowds. Combine a beach base near Puri or Konark with Chilika lake or the quieter Gopalpur coast, add a day in Bhubaneswar's temples, and travel between October and March.
Odisha is one of India's least crowded coastal states, with temples, crafts, beaches and wildlife. It is good value and calm. This guide covers when to go, where to stay, the moments worth planning, and how to keep the pace gentle.
The short answer: fewer bases, more time
For a honeymoon, two bases over five to seven nights is the right shape: a beach resort between Puri and Konark, and a second base at Chilika lake or Gopalpur.
Bhubaneswar is the gateway, about an hour and a half from Puri.
Our Royal Rath Yatra Chronicles trip follows a similar shape, and the Odisha 7-day itinerary shows a day-by-day plan.
Which month suits your wedding date?
Indian weddings cluster between November and February and again in April and May, so your honeymoon month is often decided for you. Here is what to expect in Odisha.
| Months | What to expect |
|---|---|
| October to February | pleasant and dry; the best season, with festivals such as the Konark Dance Festival in December. |
| March to May | hot and humid on the coast. |
| June to September | monsoon; Rath Yatra in Puri, usually in June or July, brings huge crowds. |
Our best time to visit Odisha guide covers each month in more detail.
Romantic bases and what each offers
Puri has a long beach and the Jagannath temple. Konark has the UNESCO-listed Sun Temple and quieter beaches nearby. Chilika lake is a large lagoon with Irrawaddy dolphins and migratory birds in winter. Gopalpur is a quiet beach town with an old-world feel. Bhubaneswar has ancient temples and the Udayagiri caves. Bhitarkanika has mangroves, crocodiles and boat safaris.Honeymoon routes that work
Five nights, beach and lake: one night in Bhubaneswar, three on the Puri-Konark coast and one at Chilika. Six nights, quiet coast: one night in Bhubaneswar, two near Konark and three in Gopalpur. Seven nights, nature: one night in Bhubaneswar, three on the coast and three at Bhitarkanika and Chilika.Getting there and around
Bhubaneswar has flights from most metros, and Puri is well connected by train. A private car is easiest between bases. Our how to reach Odisha guide covers flights and trains from Indian metros.
Konark and the coast
The Sun Temple at Konark, built as a giant stone chariot, is best seen early in the morning or late in the afternoon. The marine drive between Puri and Konark passes casuarina groves and quiet beaches, with resorts that suit couples. The sea can be rough, so swim only where lifeguards are present.
Chilika lake
Chilika is Asia's largest brackish-water lagoon. Boat trips from Satapada look for Irrawaddy dolphins, and in winter the lake hosts migratory birds. Lakeside stays and simple cottages offer quiet evenings.
Bhubaneswar, the temple city
Bhubaneswar has hundreds of ancient temples, including the Lingaraj and the graceful Mukteswar, and the Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves on the edge of the city. Spend a relaxed morning with a guide, then head to the coast. The Odisha State Museum and the Ekamra Haat craft market are good for an afternoon.
Gopalpur and the quiet south
Gopalpur-on-Sea is a small, old-fashioned beach town south of Chilika, with a lighthouse, a quiet beach and a few heritage hotels. It suits couples who want rest rather than sightseeing, and pairs naturally with the southern end of Chilika lake at Rambha.
Bhitarkanika and the crafts
Bhitarkanika National Park has mangrove creeks, saltwater crocodiles and birdlife, explored by boat from simple lodges. Closer to Puri, the craft village of Raghurajpur is known for pattachitra painting, and Pipili for colourful appliqué work; both make relaxed half-day visits. Buying directly from artisans supports them, and their work makes a meaningful keepsake of the trip.
Choosing the right stay
For a honeymoon, the room matters more than the star rating. A sea-view room on the Puri-Konark coast, a lakeside cottage at Chilika and a heritage stay in Gopalpur make the trip.
Tell the hotel you are on honeymoon when booking. Many note it and some offer a small welcome touch, but do not count on upgrades in peak season. Ask for a view room in writing, and check whether breakfast is included, as it helps the budget.
Moments worth booking in advance
- Sunrise at Konark: or on the beach.
- A dolphin boat ride at Chilika: in the morning.
- Raghurajpur craft village: for pattachitra painting.
- A seafood or vegetarian dinner by the sea: in Puri.
- A private photo session: at the Sun Temple.
Vegetarian and Jain dinners
Vegetarian couples eat very well: dalma, santula, dahi bara aloo dum, chhena poda and rasagola, plus temple-town vegetarian restaurants. Jain meals are available with notice. Our Odisha food guide has the details.
Where the honeymoon budget goes
The biggest costs are usually flights, hotels in peak season and private experiences. A few levers make a real difference:
- Avoid Rath Yatra and festival weeks if you want quiet.
- Odisha is good value, so a better sea-view room is affordable.
- Choose two bases rather than four.
- Use trains from Kolkata or Bhubaneswar.
- Eat at local restaurants.
Our Odisha trip cost guide explains each cost in more detail.
Keeping the pace gentle
A honeymoon is not a sightseeing race. Beach days are for rest; plan sightseeing early and late.
Temple visits in Puri follow strict rules, and the Jagannath temple admits Hindus only, so plan accordingly.
Honeymoon mistakes to avoid
- Too many bases, leaving more time on the road than in places.
- Booking every evening in advance and leaving no room for spontaneous dinners.
- Swimming at unguarded beaches with rough surf.
- Visiting during Rath Yatra without planning for crowds.
Practical details couples forget
No visa is needed for Indian travellers, but carry government photo ID for flights, hotels and monuments. If one partner has recently changed their name, carry a marriage certificate along with ID, as some hotels ask couples for it. Travel insurance and a small medical kit are sensible.

How Much Does an Odisha Trip Cost? Budget, Mid-Range and Luxury
An Odisha trip is good value: the main costs are hotels in Bhubaneswar and Puri, a car and driver for the temple circuit and Chilika, and getting there. Temple and monument entry, boats and food are inexpensive. Rath Yatra is by far the priciest time.
