Seven days in Odisha fits two nights in Bhubaneswar, three in Puri for Konark and Raghurajpur, and two by Chilika Lake. Here is a day-by-day plan with realistic drive times.

Seven days in Odisha is ideal for two nights in Bhubaneswar for its temples and caves, three nights in Puri for the Jagannath Temple, the Konark Sun Temple and the Raghurajpur artists' village, and two nights near Chilika Lake for dolphins and winter birds. October to March is the most comfortable time; Rath Yatra in June or July is a separate, crowded experience.

Odisha's highlights sit close together, which makes it one of India's easiest weeks to plan. The distances are short, but heat, temple queues and festival crowds can still upset a tight schedule. This itinerary gives you realistic drive times, what to cut and changes for families, couples and travellers with parents.

Days 1–2: Bhubaneswar

Day 1. Bhubaneswar is called the temple city for good reason. Start with the small, finely carved Mukteswar and Rajarani temples, then visit the Lingaraj Temple. Entry to Lingaraj is restricted to Hindus; others can see the spire from a viewing platform outside the walls.

Day 2. Explore the Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves, carved for Jain monks more than two thousand years ago, then drive to the Shanti Stupa at Dhauli, near the site associated with the Kalinga war and Emperor Ashoka's edicts. Spend the afternoon at the Odisha State Museum or the tribal museum.

Days 3–5: Puri, Raghurajpur and Konark

Day 3. Drive to Puri, roughly an hour and a half, stopping at Pipli for its colourful appliqué work. Spend the evening on Puri's beach, where the sea is rough, so swim only in marked areas.

Day 4. Hindu travellers can visit the Jagannath Temple early in the morning; mobile phones, leather items and cameras are not allowed inside. In the afternoon, visit Raghurajpur, a heritage crafts village where families paint pattachitra scrolls and palm-leaf engravings and perform gotipua dance.

Day 5. Konark is about an hour up the coast. The thirteenth-century Sun Temple, carved as a giant chariot with twenty-four wheels, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Hire an official guide at the entrance to understand the carvings, and visit before midday in warmer months.

During Rath Yatra, the festival becomes the trip. Our Royal Rath Yatra Chronicles is built around it, with viewing, guides and calm stays arranged.

Days 6–7: Chilika Lake

Chilika is Asia's largest brackish-water lagoon. From Satapada, about an hour and a half from Puri, boats go out to look for Irrawaddy dolphins and to the sandbar where the lake meets the sea. In winter, from roughly November to February, Mangalajodi on the northern shore becomes one of India's best places to see migratory birds from small country boats. Return to Bhubaneswar, about two hours away, for your flight on day seven.

Getting there and around

Bhubaneswar's Biju Patnaik International Airport has flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Chennai and Hyderabad. Trains also connect Bhubaneswar and Puri with major cities. A private car with a driver is the easiest way to cover the short distances between temples, villages and the lake.

Food along the route

Odia food is mild and largely vegetarian-friendly. Try dalma, a lentil and vegetable dish, pakhala, fermented rice eaten in summer, santula, and the cheese dessert chhena poda. Rasagola is said to have long roots in Odisha. In Puri, the Jagannath Temple's mahaprasad is sold at Ananda Bazaar to Hindu devotees. Seafood is fresh along the coast. Jain travellers will find sattvik food easier to arrange in Puri.

Why this order works

Starting in Bhubaneswar gives you the temples and history first, which makes Puri and Konark easier to understand. Chilika comes last, as a quiet end to the week, and the lake is within easy reach of the airport.

Timing this route

November to February is cool and dry, and the best time for birds at Chilika. October and March are warm but comfortable. April to June is very hot, and the monsoon from late June to September brings heavy rain and the occasional cyclone along the coast. Check weather warnings if you travel between October and November, when cyclones are also possible.

What to cut if you are short on time

With five days, visit Bhubaneswar for one day, Puri and Konark for two, and Chilika for one. Skip the state museum and Raghurajpur if you must, though the village is one of Odisha's most rewarding stops.

Variations for families and parents

Children enjoy the dolphin boat at Chilika, the beach at Puri and the giant stone wheels at Konark. For parents, plan temple visits early in the morning, avoid steep climbs at the caves, and choose hotels with lifts. Keep afternoons for rest, especially in warm months.

For couples

Couples often prefer a quieter beach stay near Puri or Chandrabhaga, a sunrise visit to Konark and a slow boat on Chilika. Bhubaneswar's temple evenings are peaceful too.

With an extra day or two

An extra day lets you add the Buddhist sites of Ratnagiri, Udayagiri and Lalitgiri, about three hours north of Bhubaneswar, where excavated monasteries and stupas sit among green fields. With two or three more days, travel south to Gopalpur-on-Sea for a quiet beach, or to the Koraput hills for weekly tribal markets, which need a local guide and a respectful approach.

Practical tips

Temples have their own rules, so follow the signs about cameras, leather and dress, and use the official shoe and phone counters. Agree a price with guides and boatmen before you start, and use the official counters at Satapada and Konark. Carry cash for village purchases; artists in Raghurajpur may accept UPI, but connectivity can be patchy. Drink bottled or filtered water, and carry oral rehydration salts in warm months.

Budget and packing

Odisha is good value. Spend on a reliable car and driver and an official guide at Konark, and save on simple local meals. Pack cotton clothing, a scarf or stole for temples, a hat, sunscreen and sandals that are easy to remove. Before you book, read our Odisha planning guide and best time to visit Odisha.

Your questions, answered

Is 7 days enough for Odisha?

Seven days covers the golden triangle of Bhubaneswar, Puri and Konark, with Chilika Lake and a crafts village. The tribal south around Koraput and the Simlipal forests need extra days.

Can non-Hindus enter the Jagannath Temple in Puri?

Entry to the Jagannath Temple is restricted to Hindus. Others can view the temple from outside, including from nearby rooftops and the Grand Road, and the Rath Yatra procession happens in public on the street.

What is the best time to visit Odisha?

October to March is the most comfortable, with winter birds at Chilika from roughly November to February. Rath Yatra falls in June or July, on a date set by the lunar calendar, when Puri is extremely crowded.

How far is Konark from Puri?

Konark is about 35 kilometres from Puri, roughly an hour by road along the coast. Most travellers visit it as a half-day trip from Puri or on the way from Bhubaneswar.
