A Kenya safari from India costs most in lodges or camps, national park and reserve fees, and the safari vehicle and guide. Flights are relatively short, and the Great Migration months from July to October are the most expensive. Here is how the budget breaks down.

A Kenya safari from India costs most in three places: lodges or tented camps, which are usually full board, national park and reserve fees charged per person per day, and the safari vehicle with a driver-guide. Flights from India are relatively short. The Great Migration months from July to October are the most expensive in the Masai Mara.

A safari is a different kind of holiday budget: much of the cost is fixed per day in the parks, and meals are usually included. This guide breaks the cost down by component, explains what moves the price and shows where to save. We do not quote exact prices, which change by season and exchange rate; use this as a framework when you compare quotes.

Flights

Non-stop flights connect Mumbai with Nairobi, and one-stop routes via the Gulf are common from other Indian cities. Fares rise in the Indian summer holidays and around Christmas. Booking three to four months ahead usually helps, especially for the migration season.

Lodges and camps

Accommodation ranges from simple camps to luxury tented lodges. Camps inside the Masai Mara reserve or in private conservancies cost more but save driving time and offer quieter game drives. Most safari stays are full board, so meals are included. Amboseli and Lake Naivasha generally cost less than the Mara.

Park and reserve fees

National parks and reserves charge fees per person per day, and rates can differ by season and by non-resident status. These fees add up over a week and are often a large share of the cost. Private conservancies charge their own fees, usually included in the camp rate. Check that your quote includes all park fees.

Safari vehicle and guide

A private safari vehicle with a driver-guide gives flexibility and suits families and photographers. Shared safaris cost less but follow a fixed plan. Pop-up roof vehicles are standard in Kenya; four-wheel-drive land cruisers handle rough roads better.

Bush flights

Short flights from Nairobi to Masai Mara airstrips save several hours of driving and are popular on shorter trips. They add cost and have strict luggage limits, usually soft bags only. Combining one flight with road transfers balances time and money.

Popular extras

A hot-air balloon safari over the Mara at sunrise is a significant extra, as are guided walking safaris in conservancies and boat rides on Lake Naivasha. A few days on the coast at Diani or Watamu adds a beach finish.

Food

Most lodges and camps serve buffet or set meals and can prepare vegetarian food on request. Nairobi has many Indian restaurants. Jain travellers should inform camps well in advance and carry some snacks for long drives.

How your route changes the cost

The Masai Mara is the most expensive region, especially in migration season. Amboseli, with its views of Kilimanjaro, and Lake Naivasha are generally less costly per night. Samburu in the north and Tsavo in the east add variety and fewer crowds. Combining Kenya with Tanzania's Serengeti or a Zanzibar beach stay adds flights and border formalities.

How many safari days to budget for

Because park fees and lodge rates are charged per day, the number of nights on safari is the biggest lever on the total. Seven to nine nights covers three regions comfortably. Fewer than five nights usually means more time in vehicles relative to game drives. Adding a night in Nairobi at the start helps after the flight and costs less than a safari night.

Package or do-it-yourself

Most safaris are booked as packages because lodges, fees, vehicles and flights must line up. Our Amboseli, Naivasha and Masai Mara safari covers three regions. When comparing, list what each option includes: lodges and meals, park fees, vehicle type, transfers, flights, activities and tips.

Eight ways to bring the total down

  1. Travel in the shoulder months rather than peak migration.
  2. Book early for the best lodges at better rates.
  3. Choose a camp just outside the reserve.
  4. Drive one leg and fly another.
  5. Share a private vehicle with family or friends.
  6. Choose one big extra, such as the balloon.
  7. Check that park fees are included in quotes.
  8. Carry US dollars in small notes for tips.

For families and parents

Some lodges have age limits for children on game drives, so check before booking. Parents may prefer bush flights to long drives and lodges with easy access.

For couples and honeymooners

Honeymooners often spend on a conservancy camp or a balloon safari and finish with a beach stay on the coast.

How to compare quotes

Line up offers item by item: nights in each park, lodge location, meals, park fees, vehicle type, flights, transfers, activities and tips. A lower price often means camps outside the reserve or shared vehicles.

eTA, health and insurance

Indian travellers need an Electronic Travel Authorisation from the official Kenya eTA portal; see our Kenya entry guide. Plan your yellow fever vaccination, which India requires when you return, and buy travel insurance with evacuation cover.

Your questions, answered

What is the biggest cost on a Kenya safari?

Accommodation in lodges or tented camps, usually on full board, and park and reserve fees, which are charged per person per day, are typically the largest costs, followed by the safari vehicle and guide.

Is the Great Migration season more expensive?

Yes. July to October is peak season in the Masai Mara, with higher lodge rates and fees and early sell-outs. Shoulder months and the green season offer lower prices.

Should I drive or fly between parks?

Driving is cheaper and lets you see the countryside, but roads can be long and bumpy. Short bush flights to the Masai Mara save time and suit shorter trips or travellers who prefer less road time.

How much should I budget for tips?

Tipping guides, drivers and camp staff is customary on safari. Ask your planner or lodge for current guidance and keep small notes in US dollars or Kenyan shillings.
