Greece Trip From India: A Complete Planning Guide

- Greek islands
Greece combines ancient Athens with island-hopping across the Aegean. Here is who it suits, how many nights, the best months, the visa checklist, flights, ferries, vegetarian food, budget levers and a sample route.
Greece is one of the most romantic and rewarding destinations in Europe for Indian travellers: the Acropolis and ancient Athens, whitewashed villages above the caldera in Santorini, golden beaches, and fresh Mediterranean food in island tavernas. Plan seven nights for Athens and one or two islands, travel between late May and early October, book ferries and caldera-view hotels early, and start your Schengen visa process at least two months before departure.
Greece has more than 200 inhabited islands, and choosing between them is the biggest planning challenge. Trying to see too many means more time on ferries than on beaches. This guide covers who Greece suits, how to choose islands, when to go, the visa checklist, flights from India, ferries, food, budget levers and a sample route.
Who Greece suits
| Greece suits | Think twice if |
|---|---|
| Honeymooners and couples | You want snow, mountains and cool weather in summer |
| History and mythology lovers | You dislike ferries and early starts |
| Beach lovers who want more than a resort | You need Indian food at every meal |
| Families with older children | You are travelling in winter and want island life |
Choosing your islands
- Santorini: the famous caldera, cliff-top villages of Oia and Fira, volcanic beaches and sunset views. Romantic but crowded in peak season.
- Mykonos: lively beach clubs, the windmills and Little Venice, plus easy trips to ancient Delos. Best for groups of friends and those who like nightlife.
- Naxos and Paros: larger, greener islands with beaches, villages and a calmer pace. Excellent for families and second visits.
- Milos: extraordinary coastal rock formations and boat trips to sea caves; quieter and very scenic.
- Crete: Greece's largest island, with Minoan Knossos, gorges, beaches and a strong food culture. Deserves four nights or more.
- Saronic islands: Hydra, Poros and Aegina are close to Athens and ideal for a day cruise.
Our Athens, Santorini and Crete guides go deeper on each.
When to go
Late May to June and September to early October are the sweet spots: warm sea, long days, open hotels and ferries, and fewer crowds than mid-summer. July and August are hot and very busy, with the highest prices and occasional strong meltemi winds that can disrupt ferries. April and late October are pleasant for Athens and sightseeing, though the sea is cooler. From November to March, many island hotels close and ferry schedules thin out; Athens and Crete remain good for history-focused trips.
Schengen visa checklist
Greece is part of the Schengen area, so Indian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa. If Greece is your main destination, you apply to Greece; the Greek missions in India pages explain the requirements and the application channel. Typical preparation includes:
- a passport issued within the last ten years and valid for at least three months after you leave the Schengen area;
- a completed application form, photographs and biometrics;
- flight, ferry and hotel reservations with a day-by-day itinerary;
- Schengen-compliant travel insurance;
- bank statements, income tax returns and employment or business documents.
Flights from India
Athens is the main gateway, with one-stop connections from Indian metros via the Gulf, Istanbul and European hubs. In summer, some international flights also reach Santorini, Mykonos and Crete directly from European hubs, which can save a ferry leg. A common pattern is to fly into Athens, ferry or fly to the islands, and fly home via Athens.
Ferries and island-hopping
Ferries link Athens's ports of Piraeus and Rafina with the Cyclades, and connect the islands with each other. High-speed ferries are faster but more affected by wind; conventional ferries are slower and steadier. Plan logical routes rather than criss-crossing the Aegean: for example, Athens – Naxos – Santorini – Athens, or Athens – Mykonos – Paros – Santorini. Allow at least three nights per island so you are not spending every other day in transit, and keep the last night before your flight home in Athens in case of weather delays.
Food for Indian travellers
Greek food is a pleasure for vegetarians: Greek salad, gemista (stuffed tomatoes and peppers), spanakopita (spinach pie), fava, tzatziki, grilled halloumi and feta, giant beans in tomato sauce, and fresh fruit and yoghurt with honey. Non-vegetarians will enjoy souvlaki, moussaka and fresh seafood. Ask about meat in stuffed vegetables and stock in rice dishes. Athens has Indian restaurants, and island tavernas are usually happy to adapt dishes.
Budget levers
- Travel in June or September rather than July and August.
- Choose one famous island and one quieter island, rather than two famous ones.
- Book ferries and hotels early; prices rise as availability falls.
- Stay in a village near Oia or Fira rather than on the caldera edge, and visit for sunset.
- Eat at tavernas away from the main sunset spots.
A sample seven-night route
| Nights | Base | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Athens | Acropolis and museum, Plaka, a Saronic islands day cruise or Cape Sounion at sunset |
| 3–4 | Naxos or Paros | Beaches, mountain villages, a slow island day |
| 5–7 | Santorini | Oia sunset, caldera boat trip, Akrotiri, wine tasting, volcanic beaches |
Start with our Athens short break, which includes the Acropolis and a cruise to Hydra, Poros and Aegina, and extend it with the islands. For a honeymoon, see our tips in planning a honeymoon from India; many apply just as well to Greece.
Greece with parents and children
Greece suits families who plan around the heat and the hills. Visit archaeological sites first thing in the morning, rest in the afternoon and head out again for dinner, which in Greece starts late. Santorini's cliff-top towns involve many steps, so older travellers may prefer a hotel with fewer stairs or a base on a flatter island such as Naxos or Paros. Children love the beaches, boat trips and the myths behind every ruin.
Practical tips
- Visit the Acropolis at opening time or late afternoon; it is exposed and hot at midday.
- Wear sturdy sandals or trainers; ancient sites and island lanes are uneven.
- Carry cash for small tavernas and island shops.
- Respect dress codes at monasteries and churches: cover shoulders and knees.
- Check ferry status the evening before and the morning of travel.
Greece is at its best when you give each island time. With one named planner and WhatsApp support throughout, the visa paperwork, ferries and hotels are arranged so you can watch the sunset instead of the timetable.
Your questions, answered
How many days are enough for Greece?
Seven nights covers Athens and one or two islands, such as Santorini and Naxos or Mykonos. Ten nights or more lets you add Crete or a third island without rushing.
Do Indians need a visa for Greece?
Yes. Greece is part of the Schengen area, and Indian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa. Check the Greek embassy's India pages for the current process and apply through the authorised appointment channel.
What is the best time to visit Greece?
Late May to June and September to early October are ideal: warm sea, long days and fewer crowds than July and August. Many island hotels and ferries run reduced schedules from November to March.
Is Greece good for a honeymoon from India?
Yes. Santorini's caldera sunsets, quieter islands such as Milos and Naxos, and boutique hotels make Greece one of Europe's best honeymoon destinations. Book cave hotels with caldera views well in advance.
