A Greece honeymoon works best with a night or two in Athens and one or two islands, such as Santorini, Naxos or Crete, chosen for your month. Here is how to choose the season, the islands, the moments worth booking and the budget levers from India.

A Greece honeymoon works best with a night or two in Athens and one or two islands chosen for your month and style. Santorini is the classic for caldera views and sunsets; Naxos, Milos and Crete add beaches, villages and space. Island-hopping by ferry is part of the charm, but fewer islands make for a calmer trip.

Greece is one of Europe's most popular honeymoon destinations, with whitewashed villages, blue seas and warm evenings by the water. This guide covers when to go, where to stay, the moments worth planning, and how to keep the pace gentle.

The short answer: fewer bases, more time

For a first honeymoon, one or two nights in Athens plus one or two islands over seven to ten nights is the right shape. Each ferry crossing takes most of a morning or afternoon, so two islands is usually the limit for a week.

Santorini is the classic choice; pairing it with a quieter island gives both drama and calm.

Our Athens trip follows a similar shape, and the 7-day Greece itinerary shows a day-by-day plan.

Which month suits your wedding date?

Indian weddings cluster between November and February and again in April and May, so your honeymoon month is often decided for you. Here is what to expect in Greece.

  • May and June: warm days, a refreshing sea and fewer crowds. A favourite honeymoon season.
  • July and August: hot, busy and expensive, especially in Santorini and Mykonos. Strong summer winds can affect ferries.
  • September and early October: warm sea, softer light and thinner crowds. One of the best times to go.
  • November to March: quiet and cool; many island hotels and ferries close or reduce services. Athens and Crete remain good options.

Our best time to visit Greece guide covers each month in more detail.

Romantic bases and what each offers

Athens has the Acropolis, the Plaka and rooftop views of the Parthenon at night. One or two nights is enough for a honeymoon. See our Athens destination page.

Santorini is famous for its caldera cliffs, sunsets from Oia and cave-style hotels. It is busy in summer; a caldera-view room is worth the splurge. See our Santorini page.

Naxos offers long sandy beaches, mountain villages and good food, and is calmer than Santorini.

Milos is known for unusual coastlines and boat trips to sea caves and coves.

Crete is large and varied, with beaches, gorges, Minoan palaces and towns such as Chania. It suits a longer stay. See our Crete page.

Mykonos is lively, with beach clubs and nightlife, and suits couples who want energy.

Honeymoon routes that work

Seven nights, classic: two nights in Athens and five in Santorini, with a ferry or short flight.

Nine nights, two islands: two nights in Athens, three in Naxos and four in Santorini.

Ten nights, Crete and Santorini: two nights in Athens, four in Chania on Crete and four in Santorini, linked by ferry.

Ferries and flights

Ferries from Athens's ports of Piraeus and Rafina link the Cyclades, with fast boats and slower conventional ferries. Book ahead in summer, and allow for weather delays, especially in July and August when the meltemi winds blow. Short domestic flights link Athens with Santorini, Mykonos and Crete and save time. Avoid planning a ferry and an international flight on the same day.

Choosing the right stay

For a honeymoon, the room matters more than the hotel's star rating. In Santorini, a caldera-view room in Oia, Imerovigli or Firostefani is special, ideally with a private terrace; note that many caldera hotels involve steps. On Naxos, Milos or Crete, a sea-view room near a beach or village gives a calmer feel. In Athens, a room with an Acropolis view is a memorable first night.

Tell the hotel you are on honeymoon when booking. Many note it and some offer a small welcome touch, but do not count on upgrades in peak season. Ask for a view room in writing, and check whether breakfast is included, as it helps the budget.

Moments worth booking in advance

  • Sunset in Santorini: from your terrace, a sunset cruise or a quieter viewpoint than crowded Oia.
  • A caldera or catamaran cruise: with swimming stops, best booked for a calm day.
  • The Acropolis: at opening time or late afternoon, with timed tickets booked in advance.
  • A seaside dinner: in a taverna by the water. Book ahead in summer and mention vegetarian needs.
  • A private photo session: in Santorini or Athens. Book a few weeks in advance.

Vegetarian and Jain dinners

Vegetarian couples eat well in Greece. Greek salad, gemista, spanakopita, fava, briam, dolmades and many meze dishes are vegetarian, and yoghurt, honey and fresh fruit make easy breakfasts. Some dishes use meat stock, so ask. Athens has Indian restaurants, and Jain meals need advance planning. Our Greece vegetarian food guide has the details.

Where the honeymoon budget goes

The biggest costs are usually flights, hotels in peak season and private experiences. A few levers make a real difference:

  • Travel in May, June or September rather than July and August.
  • Spend more on one special stay, such as a caldera-view room, and keep the second island simpler.
  • Book ferries and island hotels early for summer.
  • Choose two islands rather than four.
  • Eat at local tavernas rather than view-front restaurants for most meals.

Our Greece trip cost guide explains each cost in more detail.

Keeping the pace gentle

A honeymoon is not a sightseeing race. Islands are for slow days: swims, long lunches and sunsets. The flight from India usually connects through a Gulf or European hub, so keep the first day in Athens light, and avoid tight ferry connections.

Honeymoon mistakes to avoid

  • Too many bases, leaving more time in transit than in places.
  • Booking every evening in advance and leaving no room for spontaneous dinners.
  • Leaving visa applications too late in wedding season.
  • Choosing Santorini in peak summer without booking a caldera-view room early.

The paperwork couples forget

Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa for Greece. Apply well before the wedding, as appointment slots fill up in peak months. If one partner has recently changed their name after marriage, make sure the passport, tickets and visa all match. Carry your marriage certificate, travel insurance and hotel confirmations. Our Greece trip guide from India covers the Schengen checklist; always confirm the current requirements with the official visa service before applying.

Your questions, answered

What is the best month for a Greece honeymoon?

May, June, September and early October bring warm seas and fewer crowds than July and August. Many island hotels close from November to March.

Should we choose Santorini?

Santorini is the classic honeymoon island for its caldera views and sunsets, but it is busy and expensive. Pairing it with a quieter island such as Naxos or Milos balances the trip.

How many nights do we need?

Seven to ten nights is comfortable: one or two in Athens and the rest on one or two islands.

Is Greece good for vegetarian couples?

Yes. Greek salad, gemista (stuffed vegetables), spanakopita, fava, briam and many meze dishes are vegetarian. Jain meals need advance planning.
