Greece is best from late May to June and in September, when the sea is warm and the islands are open but less crowded. Here is a month-by-month guide to weather, crowds, prices and ferries, plus the best months by travel style.

The best time to visit Greece from India is from late May to June and in September, when the sea is warm, island hotels and ferries are running, and crowds are lighter than in July and August. Early October is lovely for Athens, Crete and Rhodes. July and August are hot, busy and expensive, while winter suits history-focused trips to Athens and Crete.

Greece's islands depend heavily on the summer season, so timing affects everything from ferry schedules to which restaurants are open. This guide gives a month-by-month view of weather, crowds, prices and sea conditions, explains each season, suggests the best months by travel style and shows how Indian holiday dates fit in.

The seasons

  • Spring (April to May): wildflowers, mild weather, ideal for ruins and walking; the sea is still cool.
  • Early summer (June): warm sea, long days, islands open, busy but not yet at peak.
  • High summer (July to August): hot, crowded, meltemi winds, highest prices.
  • Autumn (September to October): warm sea, golden light, thinner crowds, gradually closing season.
  • Winter (November to March): mild to cool, rainy spells, many island businesses closed.

Greek Orthodox Easter often falls on a different date from Western Easter; confirm it before booking.

The islands by season

Santorini and Mykonos are busiest from June to September, with peak crowds and prices in July and August. Late May and September offer a calmer experience with warm weather. Naxos, Paros and Milos are pleasant from May to October. Crete has the longest season, often from April to early November, thanks to its southern position and size. From November to March, many smaller islands become very quiet, with limited ferries and most hotels closed.

Ferries and winds

Ferry schedules expand from May and peak in July and August, with frequent connections between Athens and the Cyclades. The meltemi wind, strongest in July and August, can make seas rough and cause delays or cancellations, especially on high-speed ferries. In spring and autumn, schedules are thinner but seas are often calmer. Always keep a buffer day before your international flight home.

Fitting in Indian holidays

Indian summer holidays in May and June fall in an excellent window for Greece. Diwali, in October or November, suits Athens and Crete, though smaller islands may be closing. Christmas and New Year are best for Athens-focused trips. For honeymoons after Indian wedding season, late spring and early autumn work beautifully.

With parents and children by season

For families with older parents, May, June, September and October are best: comfortable temperatures make archaeological sites and island lanes easier. Avoid the peak heat of July and August with young children or elderly parents. Choose hotels with fewer stairs on cliff-top islands such as Santorini.

How far ahead to book

For June to September, book caldera-view hotels in Santorini and island ferries four to six months ahead. Start your Schengen visa preparation at least two months before travel. For spring and autumn, two to three months is usually enough.

Timing mistakes to avoid

  • Planning a small-island trip in winter: many hotels and ferries stop running.
  • Scheduling a ferry the day before your flight home: wind can cause cancellations.
  • Visiting the Acropolis at midday in summer: go at opening time or late afternoon.
  • Booking Santorini late for peak season: the best rooms sell out early.

In short

Choose late May, June or September for the best island experience, April, May or October for history and walking, and July and August only if you book early and accept crowds. In winter, focus on Athens and Crete.

Athens by season

Athens is a year-round city. Spring and autumn are ideal for exploring the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora and the National Archaeological Museum in comfortable temperatures. Summer is hot, often above 35°C in July and August, so visit sites at opening time and spend afternoons indoors or by the sea at the Athens Riviera. Winter is mild and quiet, with shorter queues and lower hotel prices, making it a good time for a history-focused city break.

If your dates are fixed in July or August, choose larger islands such as Crete or Naxos, which absorb crowds better than Santorini and Mykonos, and book ferries early. If you travel in winter, combine Athens with Crete or a day trip to Delphi rather than smaller islands.

Matching the route to the season

Our Athens short break works year-round and pairs with Santorini, Naxos or Crete from May to October. Our Athens, Santorini and Crete guides help plan each stop.

Whatever the month, plan ancient sites for the cooler hours and keep the middle of the day for the sea or a long lunch.

What to pack by season

  • May to October: light clothing, swimwear, a hat and strong sunscreen.
  • Spring and late autumn: layers and a light jacket for evenings and ferries.
  • Winter: a warm jacket and an umbrella.

Your questions, answered

What is the best month to visit Greece from India?

Late May, June and September offer warm sea, open hotels and ferries, and fewer crowds than July and August. Early October is also pleasant, especially in Crete and Rhodes.

Is Greece too crowded in summer?

July and August are the busiest months, with crowded islands such as Santorini and Mykonos, peak prices and occasional strong winds. Book ferries and hotels well in advance if you travel then.

Are the Greek islands open in winter?

Many island hotels, restaurants and ferry routes close or reduce services from November to March. Athens, Crete and larger islands remain open and are good for history-focused trips.

What are the meltemi winds?

The meltemi is a strong, dry northerly wind that blows across the Aegean, mainly in July and August. It keeps temperatures bearable but can make seas rough and cause ferry delays or cancellations.
