Portugal is warm and sunny from spring to autumn, with mild winters in Lisbon and the Algarve. Here is a month-by-month guide to weather, crowds, prices and festivals, plus the best months by travel style and Indian holidays.

The best time to visit Portugal from India is from April to June and in September and October, when the weather is warm and sunny, crowds are manageable and prices are lower than in mid-summer. July and August are best for the Algarve's beaches but busy and hot inland, while winter is mild in Lisbon and the south and good for value city breaks. June's street festivals in Lisbon and Porto are a highlight for many travellers.

Portugal enjoys one of Europe's sunniest climates, with the Atlantic keeping temperatures moderate along the coast. This guide gives a month-by-month view of weather, crowds, prices and festivals, explains each season, suggests the best months by travel style and shows how Indian holiday dates fit in.

The seasons

  • Spring (March to May): mild to warm, wildflowers, comfortable for city walks and day trips.
  • Summer (June to August): warm to hot, festivals in June, peak beach season in the Algarve.
  • Autumn (September to November): warm early, harvest season in the Douro, cooler and wetter by November.
  • Winter (December to February): mild and sometimes rainy, quiet, good value, especially in Lisbon and the Algarve.

Lisbon and Porto by season

Lisbon is pleasant almost all year, with the sunniest weather from April to October. Its hills and miradouros (viewpoints) are best enjoyed in spring and autumn, when walking is comfortable. Porto is cooler and wetter, especially from November to March, so it is best visited from May to October. Both cities come alive in June with the Santos Populares festivals, when neighbourhoods are decorated, music fills the streets and grilled sardines are everywhere.

The Algarve and the coast

The Algarve's beaches are at their best from May to October, with the warmest sea from July to September. July and August are the busiest and most expensive months; June and September offer warm weather and calmer beaches. Boat trips to the Benagil sea caves run in good weather, especially from spring to autumn. Winters are mild and sunny, making the Algarve popular for golf and long walks, though sea swimming is cold.

Fitting in Indian holidays

Indian summer holidays in May and June fall in an excellent window for Portugal, with warm weather and June's festivals. Diwali, in October or November, brings mild weather, though November can be rainy. Christmas and New Year offer festive lights and mild days in Lisbon. Combining Portugal with Spain works well in spring and autumn.

With parents and children by season

For families with older parents, April, May, September and October are best: Lisbon and Porto are hilly, and moderate temperatures make walking easier. Avoid the hottest weeks of July and August inland. Children enjoy the Oceanário de Lisboa, trams and beaches at Cascais or the Algarve from June to September.

How far ahead to book

For June to September, book Algarve hotels and Lisbon stays three to five months ahead. Pena Palace in Sintra and Livraria Lello in Porto need timed tickets in busy months. Start your Schengen visa preparation at least two months before travel. For winter, shorter lead times are usually fine.

Timing mistakes to avoid

  • Planning beach days in winter: the sea is cold and many beach businesses close.
  • Visiting Porto in midwinter without rain gear: the north is much wetter than Lisbon.
  • Booking the Algarve late for August: prices peak and availability falls.
  • Skipping Sintra reservations in summer: queues at Pena Palace can be long.

In short

Choose April to June or September to October for the best all-round trip, June for festivals, July to September for Algarve beaches and winter for quiet, good-value city breaks in Lisbon. Pair Portugal with Spain in spring or autumn for a comfortable Iberian journey.

The Douro Valley and central Portugal

The Douro Valley is beautiful from spring to autumn, with the grape harvest in September and early October when terraces turn golden and quintas host harvest experiences. Central Portugal's towns — Óbidos, Tomar, Coimbra and Nazaré — are pleasant from April to October. Nazaré becomes famous in winter, from roughly October to March, for some of the world's biggest surfing waves, a spectacular sight from the lighthouse when conditions are right.

If your dates are fixed in winter, choose Lisbon and the Algarve, which are milder and sunnier than Porto and the north.

Matching the route to the season

From spring to autumn, our Portugal in depth trip covers Lisbon, central Portugal and Porto. Lisbon to Madrid overland is best in spring and autumn, avoiding the hottest inland weeks.

Whatever the month, start early at Sintra and Belém, which get busy by late morning.

What to pack by season

  • Spring and autumn: layers, a light jacket and shoes with good grip for cobbles.
  • Summer: light clothing, sunscreen, swimwear and a hat.
  • Winter: a warm jacket, an umbrella and waterproof shoes.
