A day trip from Phuket or Krabi suits most Indian travellers who want to see Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon and the viewpoint quickly. An overnight on Phi Phi Don suits couples and anyone who wants quiet mornings, sunsets and snorkelling without the midday crowds. Here is how to decide and plan.
A speedboat day trip from Phuket or Krabi suits most Indian travellers who want to see Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon and Viking Cave in one go. An overnight on Phi Phi Don suits couples and anyone who wants quiet mornings, sunset from the viewpoint and snorkelling without the midday crowds. Go between November and April for the calmest seas.
The Phi Phi Islands are among Thailand's most famous sights, which means crowds and some rules to know. This guide explains the difference between a day trip and an overnight, Maya Bay's rules, ferry and speedboat options, the best months and what to pack.
The islands at a glance
| Island or spot | What it is | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Phi Phi Don | The main inhabited island, with Tonsai village and hotels | No cars; walk or take longtails |
| Phi Phi Leh | The uninhabited island with Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon | Visited by boat only |
| Maya Bay | A cliff-ringed bay made famous by film | No swimming; seasonal closure |
| Pileh Lagoon | An emerald lagoon enclosed by cliffs | Swimming often allowed from boats |
| Viking Cave | A cave used for swiftlet nest collection | Seen from the boat |
| Bamboo and Mosquito islands | Small islands with beaches and snorkelling | Popular stops on tours |
The day trip
Speedboat day tours from Phuket and Krabi typically visit Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, Viking Cave, Monkey Beach and a snorkelling spot, with lunch on Phi Phi Don or Bamboo Island. They are efficient and suit families, parents and anyone short of time. The downside is crowds at midday, when many boats arrive at once. Choose an early-departure tour to reach Maya Bay before the busiest hours.
Staying overnight
Staying one or two nights on Phi Phi Don lets you visit Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon early or late by private longtail, climb to the viewpoint for sunset, snorkel quietly and enjoy the island after day-trippers leave. Tonsai village is busy, with bars and restaurants; Long Beach and the northern bays are quieter. It suits couples, divers and travellers who want a slower pace. Bring luggage you can carry, as there are no cars and paths can be sandy.
Getting there
Ferries run from Rassada Pier in Phuket, taking about two hours, and from Klong Jilad pier in Krabi Town or Ao Nang, taking about one and a half to two hours. Speedboats on day tours are faster but bumpier. Ferries are more comfortable for parents and people prone to seasickness. All services depend on sea conditions and may be cancelled in rough weather. There is no airport on Phi Phi.
Day trip or overnight?
| Choose | If you |
|---|---|
| Day trip from Phuket or Krabi | Have limited time, travel with children or parents, or prefer a comfortable hotel elsewhere |
| One night on Phi Phi Don | Want sunset at the viewpoint and an early Maya Bay visit |
| Two nights or more | Want diving, snorkelling and quiet beaches |
The viewpoint
The Phi Phi viewpoint, a climb of steep steps from Tonsai village, looks over the twin bays of Phi Phi Don. Sunset is the most popular time. The climb takes about 20 to 30 minutes and can be hot, so carry water. A small entry fee applies.
Snorkelling and diving
Snorkelling at Pileh Lagoon, Shark Point, Bamboo Island and around Phi Phi Leh shows colourful fish and coral. Diving schools on Phi Phi Don run courses and dives. Use reef-safe sunscreen, do not touch coral, and choose operators with life jackets and good safety records.
Best months
November to April brings calm seas and clear water, with December to February busiest. From May to October, the south-west monsoon brings rain and rough seas, with some tours cancelled. Maya Bay's annual closure usually falls in the low season. Read our best time to visit Thailand guide for more.
Avoiding the crowds
Midday is the busiest time at Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon. Early-departure tours, private longtails from Phi Phi Don at sunrise, and visits on weekdays outside Indian and Western holidays help. Bamboo Island and Long Beach are calmer than Tonsai.
Food
Tonsai village has many restaurants, including a few Indian ones, and Thai kitchens can cook without fish sauce if you ask. Tour lunches are usually buffets with rice, vegetables and fruit; tell the operator about vegetarian or Jain needs in advance. Our vegetarian and Jain food guide has more tips.
For families and parents
A day trip on a larger, more stable boat suits families and parents. Choose tours with shaded seating and life jackets for everyone, and avoid long speedboat rides on windy days. Children enjoy Monkey Beach and snorkelling in shallow water.
For couples and honeymooners
Couples often stay a night or two on a quieter bay of Phi Phi Don, take a private longtail to Maya Bay early and watch sunset from the viewpoint. Our Thailand honeymoon guide has more ideas.
What to pack
Pack swimwear, a quick-dry towel, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, a dry bag for your phone, water shoes, seasickness tablets and some cash for national park fees and small purchases. On an overnight, travel light, as you may carry your bags along sandy paths.
Park fees and money
Phi Phi is part of a national park, and fees are charged to visitors, sometimes included in tour prices and sometimes collected separately. Check what your tour includes. Carry baht in cash, as card acceptance on the island varies.
Combining with Phuket and Krabi
Phi Phi sits between Phuket and Krabi, so you can visit on a day trip from either, or take the ferry from Phuket, stay on Phi Phi and continue to Krabi. Our Krabi guide and Phuket guide help you choose a base, and the Krabi destination page brings our ideas together.
Entry to Thailand
Check the latest entry rules on the Royal Thai Embassy's official page, and complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card before you fly.

Your questions, answered
Is a day trip to Phi Phi enough?
For most first-time visitors, yes. A speedboat day trip from Phuket or Krabi covers Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, Viking Cave and snorkelling. An overnight suits those who want quieter mornings and the viewpoint at sunset.
Can I swim at Maya Bay?
Swimming in Maya Bay itself has been prohibited since it reopened, to protect the reef and baby sharks. Visitors walk along the beach from a pier at the back of the bay. Rules can change, so check the national park\'s latest notices.
When is Maya Bay closed?
Maya Bay closes for a period each year, usually in the low season, to let the ecosystem recover. Check current dates with the national park or your tour operator before booking.
How do I get to Phi Phi?
Ferries take about two hours from Phuket and about one and a half to two hours from Krabi or Ao Nang. Speedboats on day tours are faster. All boats depend on sea conditions.
