Maharashtra offers Ajanta and Ellora, monsoon hills in the Sahyadris, the Konkan coast, tiger reserves and easy weekend escapes from Mumbai and Pune. Here is who it suits, how many nights, the best months and a sample route.

Maharashtra is one of India's most rewarding and underrated states for travel: the rock-cut cave temples of Ajanta and Ellora, green Sahyadri hills that come alive in the monsoon, the Konkan coast's quiet beaches and forts, and Tadoba's tigers, all within reach of Mumbai and Pune. Plan five or six nights for a circuit such as Aurangabad and the Konkan, or treat the state as a set of short, restful escapes. October to March suits most trips; the monsoon is the season for the hills.

For travellers living in Mumbai and Pune, Maharashtra is home ground, and its weekend getaways are part of daily life. For visitors from elsewhere, it offers one of India's great UNESCO sites and a coastline far quieter than Goa's. This guide covers both.

Who Maharashtra suits

  • History and architecture lovers: Ajanta, Ellora, Elephanta and the forts of the Maratha era.
  • Weekend travellers from Mumbai and Pune: hill stations, farm stays and beach towns within three to five hours.
  • Families: easy drives, forts to explore and beaches for children.
  • Expecting parents: calm, short-transfer stays such as our Nature Nurture babymoon at Oleander Farms, Karjat.
  • Wildlife lovers: Tadoba is one of India's best reserves for tiger sightings.

Ajanta and Ellora

The Ajanta and Ellora caves are both UNESCO World Heritage Sites and among the finest rock-cut monuments anywhere. Ellora's 34 caves span Buddhist, Hindu and Jain traditions, and the Kailasa Temple (Cave 16) was carved from a single rock, top down. Ajanta's Buddhist caves, about 100 kilometres from Aurangabad, hold some of India's oldest surviving murals. Plan one day for each. Ajanta is closed on Mondays and Ellora on Tuesdays, so arrange your days carefully. Hire a guide at both sites; the stories behind the carvings and paintings make the visit.

When to go

October to March is the best time for Ajanta, Ellora, Mumbai and the Konkan coast, with dry, pleasant weather. The monsoon, from June to September, transforms the Sahyadri hills: waterfalls, mist and green valleys draw crowds to Lonavala, Malshej Ghat, Bhandardara and Mahabaleshwar. Heavy rain can close roads and make forts slippery, so plan conservatively. April and May are hot across the plains, though Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani are pleasant, and strawberries are in season from roughly December to March. Ganesh Chaturthi, usually in August or September, is spectacular in Mumbai and Pune but makes travel crowded.

How to reach

Mumbai and Pune have major airports and rail connections to the whole country. Aurangabad has an airport with flights from Delhi and Mumbai, and fast trains link it with Mumbai. Nagpur is the gateway for Tadoba, about three hours away. The Konkan coast is reached by road from Mumbai or Pune, or by train on the Konkan Railway; Alibaug can also be reached by ferry from the Gateway of India. Within Maharashtra, a private car is the most flexible option.

Food in Maharashtra

Maharashtrian food is varied and full of flavour. Try misal pav, vada pav, puran poli, thalipeeth and sabudana khichdi; in Kolhapur, the fiery tambda and pandhra rassa. The Konkan coast is famous for Malvani seafood and kokum-based solkadhi, while vegetarians can enjoy Konkani dishes with coconut and jackfruit. Nashik's vineyards offer tours and tastings. Mumbai's food scene covers everything from street chaat to Parsi cafés.

Our Timeless Wonders of Maharashtra brings together the state's heritage highlights. For a slower stay close to Mumbai, the Oleander Farms babymoon keeps transfers short.

The Konkan coast

Maharashtra's Konkan coast runs for more than 700 kilometres south of Mumbai, lined with beaches, sea forts, coconut groves and fishing villages. It is quieter and less developed than Goa, and that is its appeal. Alibaug and Kashid are closest to Mumbai, good for a weekend. Murud-Janjira's island fort, reached by sailboat, is one of the most impressive sea forts in India. Further south, Ganpatipule has a beachside temple, Ratnagiri is famous for Alphonso mangoes in season (roughly April to June), and Tarkarli near Malvan offers clear water for snorkelling and scuba diving in season, with the Sindhudurg Fort just offshore.

Homestays and small resorts are the best way to experience the Konkan, with home-cooked Malvani food and slow mornings. Swimming is unsafe during the monsoon, when the sea is rough, but the coast is lush and dramatic from the shore.

With parents and children

Maharashtra's short drives make it easy for families. Ajanta and Ellora involve steps and walking, but Ellora's main caves are close to the road and Ajanta has shuttle buses and palanquin services for those who need them. On the Konkan coast, choose beaches with lifeguards and avoid swimming in the monsoon. Matheran's car-free roads, horse rides and toy train are a hit with children.

For a quieter wildlife trip, Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve near Chandrapur offers excellent tiger sightings, with safari permits booked through the official reserve portal. Plan two or three nights, ideally between March and May, when sightings around waterholes are best.

Practical tips

  • Check cave and fort closing days before you plan.
  • Monsoon treks and waterfall visits need sturdy shoes and caution.
  • Book weekend getaways early; hill stations near Mumbai and Pune fill up on long weekends.
  • Carry cash for small coastal villages, though UPI is widely used.

Pair the Konkan coast with Goa for a longer western-coast trip; our Goa planning guide has ideas. With one named planner and WhatsApp support throughout, the caves, coastal stays and drives are arranged around opening days and weather.

Your questions, answered

How many days are enough for Ajanta and Ellora?

Two nights in Aurangabad (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar) is ideal: one day for Ellora, Daulatabad Fort and Bibi Ka Maqbara, and one day for Ajanta. Note that Ajanta is closed on Mondays and Ellora on Tuesdays.

What is the best time to visit Maharashtra?

October to March suits most of the state. The monsoon, June to September, is the best time for the Sahyadri hills, waterfalls and Malshej Ghat, though heavy rain can disrupt travel. April and May are hot, except in hill stations like Mahabaleshwar.

What are the best weekend getaways from Mumbai?

Lonavala and Khandala, Karjat, Alibaug, Matheran, Igatpuri and Mahabaleshwar are popular. Karjat and Igatpuri suit slow resort stays, Alibaug suits beaches, and Matheran is a car-free hill station reached by a toy train.

Where can you see tigers in Maharashtra?

Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve near Chandrapur is Maharashtra's best-known tiger reserve and is reached from Nagpur. Pench (Maharashtra side), Umred-Karhandla and Bor are other options.
