A Maharashtra trip costs most in hotels and a car and driver, with Tadoba safari permits and jungle lodges as the main extras. Ajanta, Ellora, the forts and the hill stations are good value, and many trips start from Mumbai or Pune by road or train. Monsoon weekends in the Western Ghats and holiday weeks are the priciest times.

Maharashtra offers cave temples, forts, hill stations, beaches and tiger reserves within one state. This guide breaks the cost down by component, explains what moves the price and shows where to save. We do not quote exact prices, which change by season; use it as a framework when you compare quotes.

Getting there

Mumbai and Pune have flights from every major city. Vande Bharat and other trains link Mumbai with Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Nagpur at good value, and the Konkan Railway runs along the coast. See our guide to reaching Maharashtra.

Hotels and resorts

Hill stations such as Lonavala, Mahabaleshwar and Matheran have resorts and homestays whose prices jump on weekends. Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar has good-value hotels near Ajanta and Ellora. Tadoba has jungle lodges at every level. Konkan beach towns offer homestays at low cost.

Car and driver

A car and driver is the most comfortable option outside Mumbai and Pune. Quotes should include fuel, allowances and tolls, which are significant on the Mumbai–Pune and Samruddhi expressways. Trains to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Nagpur reduce long driving days.

Ajanta and Ellora

Ajanta and Ellora are UNESCO World Heritage Sites with modest entry tickets for Indian visitors. Ajanta is usually closed on Mondays and Ellora on Tuesdays. A licensed guide adds a great deal at both sites. Our Timeless Wonders of Maharashtra includes guides and transfers.

Tadoba safaris

Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve permits are booked through the official Tadoba booking site, with gypsies and guides charged separately. Core zones are pricier and sell out early; buffer zones cost less and often have good sightings. Lodges near Moharli and Kolara range from simple to luxurious.

Hill stations

Lonavala, Mahabaleshwar, Panchgani, Matheran and Igatpuri are close to Mumbai and Pune. Weekday stays are much cheaper than weekends. Matheran is car-free, so budget for horses or hand-pulled rickshaws, and the toy train when it runs.

The Konkan coast

Alibaug, Murud, Ganpatipule, Ratnagiri and Tarkarli offer quiet beaches, forts and seafood at good value. Homestays are common, and the Konkan Railway and ferries from Mumbai keep transport costs low. Water sports at Tarkarli and Malvan are moderate extras.

Food

Food is excellent value: vada pav and misal pav, Kolhapuri thalis, Malvani seafood, and puran poli. Vegetarian and Jain food is easy to find in Mumbai, Pune and the pilgrim towns. Resort dining in the hills costs more.

How your route changes the cost

Weekend trips from Mumbai and Pune to the hills or coast are short and inexpensive if taken midweek. A heritage trip to Ajanta and Ellora adds a flight or train. Combining Tadoba with Pench in Madhya Pradesh via Nagpur adds safaris and lodges.

How many days to budget for

Two nights suits a hill station or beach break. Ajanta and Ellora need two to three nights, and Tadoba two to three nights for four to six safaris.

Weekend pricing

Because Mumbai and Pune residents travel every weekend, prices in Lonavala, Mahabaleshwar, Alibaug and Karjat rise sharply on Fridays and Saturdays, especially in the monsoon. Sunday-to-Thursday stays are often far cheaper and much quieter. Our Oleander Farms babymoon at Karjat is a calm option.

Pilgrim towns

Shirdi, Nashik and Trimbakeshwar, Pandharpur and the Ashtavinayak temples draw large numbers of pilgrims. Hotels range from dharamshalas to modern hotels, and prices rise on festival days and weekends. Official darshan booking systems help avoid long queues where available.

Cheaper ways to get around

Maharashtra State Road Transport buses, including Shivneri services between Mumbai and Pune, are cheap and frequent. Mumbai's local trains and metro are very inexpensive. Ferries from Mumbai to Alibaug save road time and cost little.

Package or do-it-yourself

A package makes the budget predictable and secures the stays, drivers and permits that sell out in peak weeks. Packages are especially useful for Tadoba, where permits, gypsies and lodges must line up. When comparing, list what each option includes: stays and meals, transport, guides, entry tickets, permits and taxes.

Eight ways to bring the total down

  1. Travel midweek to the hills and coast.
  2. Use trains to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Nagpur.
  3. Use ferries to Alibaug.
  4. Book Tadoba permits early.
  5. Use buffer zones for some safaris.
  6. Stay in Konkan homestays.
  7. Eat at local restaurants.
  8. Avoid Christmas–New Year in the hills.

For families and parents

Families need larger vehicles and should plan Ajanta with rest stops, as the caves involve steps. Parents may prefer palanquins at Ajanta and canters or gypsies with front seats at Tadoba.

For couples and honeymooners

Couples often spend on a hill-station resort or a jungle lodge at Tadoba and save on transport.

How to compare quotes

Line up offers item by item: nights in each place, hotel category and location, meals, vehicle size and driver allowances, safari permits and gypsy charges, expressway tolls, guides, tickets and taxes. A lower price often means weekend rates were not checked or safaris are excluded.

Your questions, answered

What is the biggest cost on a Maharashtra trip?

Hotels and a car and driver are usually the biggest costs. At Tadoba, safari permits, gypsies and jungle lodges add significantly.

Are Ajanta and Ellora expensive to visit?

No. Entry tickets for Indian visitors are modest, though Ajanta involves a shuttle from the parking area and a licensed guide is worth hiring. A car for the day from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar is the main cost.

How much do Tadoba safaris cost?

Safari permits are booked through the official Tadoba booking site, with gypsy and guide charges on top. Core zones cost more and sell out early for weekends and holidays.
