A Japan honeymoon works best with Tokyo, a ryokan night in Hakone or near Mount Fuji, and Kyoto, linked by bullet trains, with cherry blossom or autumn leaves if your dates allow. Here is how to choose the month, the bases, the moments worth booking and the budget levers from India.

A Japan honeymoon works best with Tokyo, a ryokan night in Hakone or near Mount Fuji, and Kyoto, linked by bullet trains. Time it for cherry blossom or autumn leaves if your dates allow, book a room with a private onsen for one special night, and keep the pace slow.

Japan is safe, punctual and endlessly interesting, with neon cities, quiet temples, hot springs and seasonal beauty. It rewards couples who plan the big moments and leave space for wandering. This guide covers when to go, where to stay, the moments worth planning, and how to keep the pace gentle.

The short answer: fewer bases, more time

For a first honeymoon, three bases over seven to ten nights is the right shape: Tokyo, a ryokan in Hakone or by Lake Kawaguchiko, and Kyoto. Bullet trains link Tokyo and Kyoto in a little over two hours.

Couples with more time can add Osaka, Nara or Hiroshima, but each extra base costs half a day.

Our Tokyo, Fuji and Kyoto trip follows a similar shape, and the Japan 7-day itinerary shows a day-by-day plan.

Which month suits your wedding date?

Indian weddings cluster between November and February and again in April and May, so your honeymoon month is often decided for you. Here is what to expect in Japan.

MonthsWhat to expect
Late March to early Aprilcherry blossom season. Very popular; book well ahead.
May and Junepleasant May; June brings the rainy season in much of Japan.
July and Augusthot and humid, with summer festivals and fireworks.
October and Novembercomfortable days and autumn leaves, peaking in Kyoto in mid to late November.
December to Februarycold and clear, good for onsen and views of Mount Fuji; snow in the north.

Our best time to visit Japan guide covers each month in more detail.

Romantic bases and what each offers

Tokyo combines neighbourhoods such as Shibuya, Shinjuku and Asakusa with gardens, food and nightlife. Three nights is ideal. See our Tokyo page. Hakone is a hot-spring area with ryokans, lakes and views of Mount Fuji on clear days. Lake Kawaguchiko offers some of the closest views of Mount Fuji, with lakeside ryokans. Kyoto has temples, shrines, gardens and the old streets of Gion and Higashiyama. See our Kyoto page. Nara has great temples and deer in a park, an easy day trip from Kyoto. Osaka is lively and known for food. See our Osaka page.

Honeymoon routes that work

Seven nights, classic: three nights in Tokyo, one in a Hakone ryokan and three in Kyoto. Nine nights, with Osaka: three nights in Tokyo, one in Hakone, three in Kyoto with Nara and two in Osaka. Ten nights, slow: three nights in Tokyo, two by Lake Kawaguchiko and five in Kyoto.

Getting around

Bullet trains (shinkansen) link Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Hiroshima, and local trains and subways cover the cities. Luggage forwarding services let you send suitcases between hotels, which is helpful before a ryokan night. Compare rail passes with point-to-point tickets for your route.

Choosing the right stay

For a honeymoon, the room matters more than the hotel's star rating. Japanese city rooms can be small, so check room size. A ryokan with a private open-air bath (rotenburo) or a reservable private onsen is the splurge worth making. In Kyoto, stay near Gion or Higashiyama to walk the old streets early and late.

Tell the hotel you are on honeymoon when booking. Many note it and some offer a small welcome touch, but do not count on upgrades in peak season. Ask for a view room in writing, and check whether breakfast is included, as it helps the budget.

Moments worth booking in advance

  • A ryokan night: with a private onsen and a kaiseki dinner, briefed in advance for vegetarian food.
  • Cherry blossom or autumn leaves: in Kyoto's gardens, early in the morning before crowds.
  • A tea ceremony: in Kyoto, in a small group or private.
  • Mount Fuji on a clear morning: from Hakone or Lake Kawaguchiko.
  • A private photo session: in Kyoto in kimono. Book a few weeks in advance.

Vegetarian and Jain dinners

Vegetarian couples need care in Japan, because dashi, a stock often made from bonito fish, is used in soups, sauces and many dishes. Shojin ryori (Buddhist temple food), vegetarian restaurants and Indian restaurants in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka help. Brief ryokans well in advance; Jain meals need careful planning. Our Japan vegetarian food guide has the details.

Where the honeymoon budget goes

The biggest costs are usually flights, hotels in peak season and private experiences. A few levers make a real difference:

  • Avoid peak cherry blossom and autumn weeks if budget matters; May and October are calmer.
  • Spend on one ryokan night and keep city hotels simpler.
  • Compare rail passes with individual tickets.
  • Eat at casual restaurants and food halls for lunch.
  • Choose three bases rather than five.

Our Japan trip cost guide explains each cost in more detail.

Keeping the pace gentle

A honeymoon is not a sightseeing race. Japan has endless sights; choose a few temples and neighbourhoods rather than ticking off lists. Flights from India are usually one-stop or direct to Tokyo, so keep the first day light.

Honeymoon mistakes to avoid

  • Too many bases, leaving more time in transit than in places.
  • Booking every evening in advance and leaving no room for spontaneous dinners.
  • Leaving visa paperwork too late in wedding season.
  • Booking cherry blossom or autumn leaves dates late, when rooms are scarce.

The paperwork couples forget

Indian passport holders need a visa or travel authorisation for Japan. Apply through the official channel, the Embassy of Japan in India, well before the wedding, and read our Japan visa guide for Indians for the steps. If one partner has recently changed their name after marriage, make sure the passport, tickets and visa all match. Carry your marriage certificate, travel insurance and hotel confirmations, and always confirm the current requirements on the official site before applying.

Your questions, answered

What is the best month for a Japan honeymoon?

Late March to early April brings cherry blossom, and November brings autumn leaves, though both are busy. May and October are pleasant and calmer. Summer is hot and humid, and winter is cold but clear.

Should we stay in a ryokan?

Yes, for at least one night. A traditional inn with tatami rooms, a hot-spring bath and a multi-course dinner is a highlight. Brief the ryokan early on vegetarian needs.

How many nights do we need?

Seven to ten nights is comfortable for Tokyo, Hakone or the Fuji area, and Kyoto, with a day in Nara or Osaka.

Is Japan good for vegetarian couples?

It takes more care than Europe, because dashi (fish stock) is in many dishes. Temple food, vegetarian restaurants and Indian restaurants help, and planning ahead makes it manageable.
