Most travellers reach Himachal Pradesh by road or train via Chandigarh, or by flying into Kangra for Dharamshala, Bhuntar for Manali or Shimla's small airport. Overnight buses from Delhi to Manali and the Kalka–Shimla toy train are popular alternatives.
Most travellers reach Himachal Pradesh by road or train via Chandigarh, the nearest large airport and railhead, or by flying into Kangra for Dharamshala, Bhuntar for Kullu and Manali, or Shimla's small airport. From Delhi, overnight buses reach Manali in 12 to 14 hours, and the Kalka–Shimla toy train is a slow, scenic way up to Shimla.
Himachal's hill towns sit at the end of long mountain roads, and small airports are often affected by weather. Choosing the right gateway for your route makes a big difference to your first day. This guide explains the options by air, rail and road, and the drive times between the main hill towns.
The short answer
| Destination | Best gateway | From Delhi |
|---|---|---|
| Shimla | Chandigarh by air or train, then road or toy train from Kalka | About 7 to 8 hours by road |
| Manali | Overnight bus or drive; or fly to Bhuntar | About 12 to 14 hours by road |
| Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj | Fly to Kangra, or train to Pathankot | About 10 to 11 hours by road |
| Dalhousie | Train to Pathankot, then road | About 10 to 12 hours by road |
| Kasauli | Chandigarh | About 6 hours by road |
By air
Chandigarh is the most reliable gateway, with flights from most metros. It is about three to four hours from Shimla and eight to nine hours from Manali.
Kangra (Gaggal), about 30 to 45 minutes from Dharamshala, has flights from Delhi and a few other cities. Bhuntar, near Kullu, is about an hour and a half from Manali. Shimla airport has very limited flights. Small mountain airports are affected by weather, so allow for delays or cancellations, especially in winter and the monsoon.
By train
Fast trains from Delhi, including the Shatabdi and Vande Bharat, reach Chandigarh in about three to three and a half hours, and Kalka a little later. From Kalka, the Kalka–Shimla narrow-gauge railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, takes about five to six hours through more than a hundred tunnels. For Dharamshala, Dalhousie and the Kangra valley, Pathankot is the main railhead, and Una and Amb Andaura in the south of the state also have trains from Delhi.
By road
Most travellers reach Himachal by road. Delhi to Shimla is about 350 kilometres, usually seven to eight hours via Chandigarh. Delhi to Manali is about 530 kilometres, usually 12 to 14 hours, and overnight Volvo buses are popular. Delhi to Dharamshala takes about ten to eleven hours. Hill roads are narrow and slow; plan to cover the mountain sections in daylight.
Taking the overnight bus
Overnight Volvo and semi-sleeper buses leave Delhi in the evening and reach Manali or Dharamshala the next morning. Choose a reputable operator, book seats near the front if you get motion sickness, and carry a warm layer, as buses can be cold at night. You arrive tired, so plan a rest morning before sightseeing.
Drive times within Himachal
| Route | Approximate time |
|---|---|
| Chandigarh to Shimla | 3 to 4 hours |
| Shimla to Manali | 7 to 8 hours |
| Manali to Dharamshala | 7 to 8 hours |
| Dharamshala to Dalhousie | About 4 hours |
| Manali to Sissu via the Atal Tunnel | About 1.5 hours |
| Bhuntar airport to Manali | About 1.5 hours |
Reaching Spiti and Lahaul
Spiti is reached either from Shimla via Kinnaur, a route usually open for much of the year but slow, or from Manali via the Atal Tunnel and the Kunzum Pass, which is open only in summer. Many travellers enter from Shimla and leave via Manali to acclimatise gradually. These are remote mountain roads, so travel with an experienced driver, carry cash and allow buffer days.
Arriving from Punjab and Jammu
Amritsar, with its international airport and the Golden Temple, is about five hours by road from Dharamshala, making it easy to combine Punjab with the Kangra valley. From Jammu, Pathankot and Dalhousie are a few hours away by road or rail.
Getting around
A private car with an experienced hill driver is the most comfortable way to travel. Himachal Road Transport Corporation buses connect most towns cheaply. In Shimla, the Mall Road area is pedestrian, with lifts linking levels. In Manali and Dharamshala, local taxi unions operate sightseeing routes, and some high-altitude roads have their own permit rules. Our Himalayan Tranquillity trip includes a driver for the Kangra valley.
Matching the route to the trip
| Trip style | Arrive | Leave |
|---|---|---|
| Shimla and Manali | Chandigarh or Kalka | Bhuntar or by road to Chandigarh |
| Dharamshala and Dalhousie | Kangra or Pathankot | Pathankot or Kangra |
| Manali and Lahaul | Overnight bus or Bhuntar | Bhuntar or by road |
| Quick weekend in Kasauli | Chandigarh | Chandigarh |
Your first day
After an overnight bus or long drive, keep the first day light. In Manali, rest and walk around Old Manali or the Hadimba Temple; in Shimla, stroll the Mall Road and the Ridge; in McLeod Ganj, visit the Tsuglagkhang complex. Higher places such as Sissu and Spiti need gradual acclimatisation, so do not go straight up on arrival.
Season and road conditions
March to June is the busiest season, with families escaping the heat of the plains. September to November brings clear views. December to February brings snow, beautiful but with road closures and chains needed on some routes. The monsoon from July to August brings landslides; check road updates before travel. Read our month-by-month guide before booking.
Travelling with parents
Fly to Chandigarh or take a daytime train, then drive with breaks rather than taking an overnight bus. Hill roads can cause motion sickness, so carry medicine and stop often. Choose hotels with lifts or ground-floor rooms, as many hill hotels have steep steps.
For couples
Couples often fly into Kangra for a quieter stay around Dharamshala and the tea gardens of Palampur, or take the toy train to Shimla for the journey itself. Food lovers can follow Flavours of Himachal, which introduces dham feasts and local kitchens.
Budget options
State buses and overnight Volvo services are the cheapest way into the hills. Trains to Chandigarh, Kalka and Pathankot are inexpensive when booked early. Sharing a car and driver among four travellers keeps costs reasonable and gives more flexibility than buses.
Practical tips
Carry warm layers in every season, as evenings are cold at altitude. Mobile coverage is patchy in remote valleys. Read our 7-day Himachal itinerary and Himachal planning guide to plan the rest of your trip.

Your questions, answered
What is the nearest major airport to Himachal Pradesh?
Chandigarh is the nearest large airport with many flights, about three to four hours from Shimla. Smaller airports at Kangra (for Dharamshala), Bhuntar (for Kullu and Manali) and Shimla have fewer flights that are more affected by weather.
How do I reach Manali from Delhi?
Most travellers take an overnight bus or drive, which takes about 12 to 14 hours. Alternatively, fly to Bhuntar, about 50 kilometres from Manali, or fly to Chandigarh and drive the rest of the way.
Is the Kalka–Shimla toy train worth it?
Yes, if you have time. The narrow-gauge line climbs through tunnels and bridges and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It takes about five to six hours, so book a seat in advance and travel in daylight.
Do I need a permit for Rohtang Pass?
Vehicles going to Rohtang Pass need a permit issued online by the local administration, with daily limits. Check the current rules before planning the day, as the pass can also close for weather.
