Goa has two airports: Mopa in the north, best for Calangute, Anjuna and Morjim, and Dabolim near Vasco, best for Panaji and the south. The Konkan Railway from Mumbai and the roads from Pune and Bengaluru are good alternatives. Here is how to choose.

The easiest way to reach Goa is to fly. Choose Manohar International Airport at Mopa for north Goa beaches such as Calangute, Anjuna and Morjim, and Dabolim, near Vasco da Gama, for Panaji, Old Goa and south Goa. From Mumbai, the Konkan Railway takes about eight hours on the fastest trains, and roads from Pune and Bengaluru are good for road trips.

Goa is small, but north and south are about two hours apart by road, and choosing the wrong airport or station can add time on arrival. This guide explains which airport to choose, the main train routes, road options and how to get around once you arrive.

The short answer

FromBest optionTypical time
DelhiNon-stop flight to Mopa or DabolimAbout 2.5 hours
MumbaiShort flight, or the Konkan RailwayAbout 1 hour by air; about 8 hours by fast train
BengaluruFlight, overnight train or roadAbout 1 hour by air
PuneFlight or road via KolhapurAbout 9 hours by road
Hyderabad, Chennai, KolkataNon-stop or one-stop flight1.5 to 2.5 hours by air

Goa's two airports

Manohar International Airport, Mopa, opened in 2023 in the far north of the state. It is about an hour from Calangute and Baga and closer to Morjim, Ashwem and Arambol.

Dabolim Airport, near Vasco da Gama, is central. It is about 45 minutes from Panaji and roughly 30 to 45 minutes from Colva and Benaulim, and around an hour and a half from Palolem.

Check which airport your flight uses before booking a hotel or transfer; both handle domestic and international flights.

By train

The Konkan Railway runs along the coast from Mumbai through Ratnagiri into Goa, a scenic route with tunnels, rivers and the Western Ghats. Vande Bharat, Tejas and Jan Shatabdi trains take about eight to nine hours from Mumbai; overnight trains such as the Konkan Kanya Express save a hotel night. From Bengaluru and Hubballi, trains reach Vasco da Gama and Madgaon via the Dudhsagar falls, which are spectacular in the monsoon. From Delhi, long-distance trains take more than a day.

From Bengaluru, it takes about ten to twelve hours via Hubballi or Belagavi. Overnight sleeper buses run from Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Ghat sections can be slow in heavy rain.

Getting around Goa

Taxis and app-based cabs work in most tourist areas, and prepaid taxi counters operate at both airports and Madgaon station. Many visitors rent scooters or cars; carry your licence and wear a helmet. State Kadamba buses connect towns cheaply. A private driver is the most relaxed way to explore both north and south, especially with family. Our Essence of Goa includes transfers and guided days.

Season and booking

November to February is the main season, with peak prices around Christmas, New Year and long weekends, when flights and trains fill weeks ahead. The monsoon from June to September brings heavy rain, rough seas and green landscapes, and is popular for the Konkan train journey and the Dudhsagar falls. Read our month-by-month guide to Goa before booking.

Your first day

Most flights land by midday, leaving the afternoon for the beach. Keep the first day close to your hotel: a swim, a sunset walk and dinner at a beach shack or a Goan restaurant. Save Old Goa's churches, Fontainhas in Panaji and the spice plantations for the following days, when you have a car or driver. If you arrive by overnight train, check whether your hotel allows early check-in.

Budget options

The train is the best-value way to reach Goa from Mumbai, Pune and Bengaluru, especially on overnight services that save a night's hotel. Book three to four weeks ahead in season, as Konkan Railway trains fill quickly. Overnight buses are cheaper still. Flights are often cheapest midweek and outside December. Within Goa, Kadamba buses and shared taxis keep costs low, and renting a scooter is economical if you are a confident rider.

Arriving from abroad

Both airports handle international flights, mainly from the Gulf, with some seasonal services from other countries in winter. Non-resident Indians flying from the Middle East can often reach Goa without changing planes in Mumbai or Delhi. Check which of the two airports your flight uses, as this affects your transfer time.

The monsoon journey

From June to September, the Konkan Railway runs on a monsoon timetable with slower speeds for safety, so journeys take longer. In return, you see the Western Ghats at their greenest, with waterfalls beside the tracks. Roads through the ghats can be affected by landslides, so check conditions before driving.

Travelling with parents

Choose the airport nearest your hotel, book a private transfer and avoid late-night arrivals on the far side of the state. For the train, book lower berths or AC chair car seats early. South Goa's calmer beaches often suit older travellers better than the busy north.

For couples

Couples often fly into Dabolim for a quiet stay in south Goa, or split the trip between the north and the south. Our Just Us by the Sea and Goan Experiential and Wellness are planned for slower stays.

Practical tips

Agree taxi fares before you start or use the app and prepaid counters. Allow extra time on the bridges into Panaji at rush hour. Read our 7-day Goa itinerary and Goa planning guide to build the rest of the trip, or explore our Goa destination page.
