How Much Does a Himachal Pradesh Trip Cost? Budget, Mid-Range and Luxury
- Himachal Pradesh
- Shimla
- Manali
- Budget
A Himachal Pradesh trip costs most in hotels and a car and driver for the long hill roads. Overnight buses, trains to Chandigarh and Kalka, homestays and simple dhaba meals keep costs down, while summer holidays and snow season push prices up.
A Himachal Pradesh trip costs most in two places: hotels and a car with an experienced hill driver for the long mountain roads. Overnight buses, trains to Chandigarh and Kalka, homestays and dhaba meals keep costs down, while summer holidays and the snow season push hotel prices up sharply in Shimla and Manali.
Himachal suits backpackers, families and luxury travellers alike. This guide breaks the cost down by component, explains what moves the price and shows where to save. We do not quote exact prices, which change by season; use it as a framework when you compare quotes.
Where the money goes
| Component | Share of the budget | What moves it |
|---|---|---|
| Hotels and homestays | Largest | Town, view, season, category |
| Car and driver | Large | Days, distance, hill routes, vehicle size |
| Getting there | Medium | Bus, train or flight, booking time |
| Activities | Small to medium | Paragliding, rafting, skiing, toy train |
| Permits and local cabs | Small | Rohtang permits, local union taxis |
| Food | Small | Dhabas, cafés, hotel dining |
Getting there
Overnight Volvo buses from Delhi to Manali and Dharamshala are the cheapest option. Trains to Chandigarh, Kalka and Pathankot are good value, and flights to Chandigarh, Kangra or Bhuntar save time but cost more. See our guide to reaching Himachal Pradesh.
Hotels and homestays
Shimla and Manali have the widest range, from guesthouses to luxury resorts; rooms with valley views cost more. Homestays in Old Manali, Kasol, the Kangra valley and Spiti offer good value and home-cooked food. Prices peak in May, June and the Christmas–New Year snow season.
Car and driver
An experienced hill driver is worth the cost on Himachal's narrow roads. The quote should include fuel, the driver's allowance, tolls and parking. Long legs such as Shimla to Manali or Manali to Dharamshala take most of a day, so fewer bases reduce costs.
Permits and local cabs
Rohtang Pass requires a vehicle permit issued online by the local administration, with daily limits. Some valleys and points are served by local union taxis rather than outside vehicles. Budget for these, and check current rules before you go.
Activities
Paragliding at Bir Billing and Solang, rafting on the Beas near Kullu, skiing in Solang and the Kalka–Shimla toy train are moderately priced. Choose licensed operators, check equipment and avoid activities in poor weather.
Food
Dhabas and cafés serve good-value North Indian, Tibetan and Himachali food. Try a dham feast, siddu and trout in Manali, and momos and thukpa in McLeod Ganj. Vegetarian food is easy to find. Food lovers can follow our Flavours of Himachal.
Spiti and remote valleys
Spiti and Lahaul are remote and cost more per day than they seem: long drives, fewer stays, fuel at a premium and the need for a capable vehicle and driver. Homestays keep accommodation affordable. Allow buffer days for weather.
How your route changes the cost
A Shimla–Manali loop is the classic route and involves one long drive. The Kangra valley with Dharamshala, Palampur and Bir is quieter and good value. Adding Spiti or Lahaul extends the trip and the budget.
How many days to budget for
Six to seven nights covers Shimla and Manali or the Kangra valley comfortably. Spiti needs eight to ten nights. Every extra driving day adds car costs, so reduce hotel changes.
Cheaper ways to get around
Himachal Road Transport Corporation buses connect almost every town and are very cheap, though slow. Shared taxis run on popular routes such as Manali to Solang and Dharamshala to McLeod Ganj. In Shimla, the lifts and pedestrian Mall Road make a car unnecessary within the town. These options suit flexible travellers; families usually prefer a private car.
The Kangra valley
Dharamshala, McLeod Ganj, Palampur and Bir offer good value compared with Shimla and Manali. Tea gardens, Tibetan monasteries and paragliding at Bir make for a varied, less crowded trip, and the Kangra airport and Pathankot railhead keep transport costs reasonable.
Weekend crowds
Shimla, Kasauli, Manali and Dharamshala are popular weekend escapes from Delhi, Chandigarh and Punjab. Friday and Saturday nights cost more, and traffic jams on the approach roads are common. Plan arrivals and departures midweek where you can.
Warm clothing and gear
Snow boots, jackets and gloves can be rented in Manali and Solang for snow days, which is cheaper than buying for a single trip. Pack thermal layers in winter and a warm layer in every season.
Budget, mid-range and luxury styles
| Style | Stays | Transport and experiences |
|---|---|---|
| Guesthouses and homestays | Overnight buses, shared taxis, dhabas | |
| Mid-range hotels with views | Private car and driver, a few activities | |
| Luxury resorts and boutique stays | Flights, private car and guide, curated experiences |
How the season changes the bill
| Period | Prices | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| May and June | Highest | School holidays, crowds and traffic |
| Late December to early January | High | Snow, New Year crowds |
| March, April, September to November | Moderate | Clear views, pleasant days |
| July and August | Lowest | Monsoon, landslide risk |
Package or do-it-yourself
A package makes the budget predictable and secures the stays, drivers and permits that sell out in peak weeks. Our Himalayan Tranquillity covers the Kangra valley. When comparing, list what each option includes: stays and meals, transport, guides, entry tickets, permits and taxes.
Eight ways to bring the total down
- Avoid May, June and New Year weeks.
- Take overnight buses or trains.
- Stay in homestays.
- Choose fewer bases.
- Rent snow gear rather than buying.
- Eat at dhabas and cafés.
- Share a car with family or friends.
- Visit in spring or autumn.
For families and parents
Families need larger vehicles and should avoid very long driving days. Parents may prefer hotels with lifts and fewer stairs, which are common in hill towns.
For couples and honeymooners
Couples often spend on a valley-view cottage or boutique stay and save on transport and food.
How to compare quotes
Line up offers item by item: nights in each place, hotel category and location, meals, vehicle size and driver allowances, permits and local cab charges, guides, tickets and taxes. A lower price often means a smaller car or hotels far from the town centre.

Paragliding at Bir Billing and Solang, river rafting near Kullu and skiing are moderately priced compared with international destinations. Choose licensed operators and check safety equipment.
