The Baltics are best from May to September, with long days and midsummer celebrations, and atmospheric in December for Christmas markets. Here is a month-by-month guide and the best months by travel style.

The best time to visit the Baltics — Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania — from India is from May to September, when days are long, outdoor cafés are open and the weather is mild to warm. June brings midsummer celebrations, July and August are the warmest months, and December is atmospheric for Christmas markets. January to March is cold, snowy and dark, but quiet and good value.

The Baltic states have a cool, temperate climate with long summer days and short winter days. This guide gives a month-by-month view of weather, crowds, prices and events, explains each season, suggests the best months by travel style and shows how Indian holiday dates fit in.

The seasons

  • Spring (April to May): mild, blossoms, lengthening days, quiet old towns.
  • Summer (June to August): long days, white nights in the north, midsummer, outdoor festivals.
  • Autumn (September to October): golden forests, crisp air, fewer visitors.
  • Winter (November to March): cold, snow, short days, Christmas markets in December.

Summer and midsummer

Summer is the Baltics at their liveliest. Days are long, with daylight lasting until around 11 pm in June in Tallinn, and old-town squares fill with outdoor cafés. Midsummer, on 23 and 24 June, is the region's most important celebration, with bonfires, singing and countryside festivities; many shops and offices close, so plan around it. Beaches at Jūrmala in Latvia, Pärnu in Estonia and Palanga in Lithuania are popular in July and August, though the sea stays cool.

Christmas markets

From late November to early January, Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius host charming Christmas markets. Tallinn's market in Town Hall Square is one of Europe's most atmospheric, with a medieval backdrop. Riga's Dome Square market and Vilnius's Cathedral Square market are cosy and good value. December days are short and cold, so pack warm layers and plan museum visits for the afternoons.

Fitting in Indian holidays

Indian summer holidays in May and June are an excellent time for the Baltics, with long days and mild weather. Diwali, in October or November, brings cool autumn weather. Christmas and New Year suit market lovers who don't mind the cold. The Baltics combine easily with Helsinki and the Nordics on one Schengen visa.

With parents and children by season

For families with older parents, May to September is best: mild weather makes cobbled old towns easier to explore. Children enjoy Trakai's island castle, Tallinn's towers and the Helsinki ferry in summer. In winter, dress children warmly and plan indoor breaks.

How far ahead to book

For June to August and December, book hotels in Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius two to four months ahead. Start your Schengen visa preparation at least two months before travel. For spring and autumn, shorter lead times are usually fine.

Timing mistakes to avoid

  • Planning shopping or offices on midsummer days: many close on 23 and 24 June.
  • Underestimating winter darkness: December days are very short.
  • Expecting a warm sea: the Baltic stays cool even in summer.
  • Booking Tallinn late on cruise days: the old town can be crowded in summer.

In short

Choose May to September for the best all-round trip, late June for midsummer, December for Christmas markets, and January to March for snowy, quiet, good-value city breaks.

The three capitals by season

Tallinn's medieval old town is at its most atmospheric in summer evenings and under December snow, when the Town Hall Square market glows. Riga's Art Nouveau district and Central Market are pleasant year-round, with the city's festivals in summer and its Christmas market in Dome Square in December. Vilnius's Baroque old town and Užupis district come alive in summer with outdoor cafés and street art, while the Kaziukas craft fair in early March offers a lively winter-to-spring event.

If your dates are fixed in winter, plan more indoor time in museums and cafés, and enjoy the snowy old towns in the short daylight hours. If you travel in summer, add a day at the coast at Jūrmala, Pärnu or Palanga.

Matching the route to the season

From May to September, our Baltic capitals with Helsinki trip makes the most of long days, and in December it can be adapted for the Christmas markets.

Whatever the season, start early in Tallinn's old town, which can be busy with cruise visitors in summer, and allow time for the scenic drives between the capitals, with stops at castles and the Hill of Crosses.

Ferries between Tallinn and Helsinki run year-round, many times a day.

In summer, book scenic stops such as Rundāle Palace and Trakai Castle early in the day to avoid tour groups.

In winter, the old towns look their best after a fresh snowfall, especially early in the morning.

What to pack by season

  • Summer: light layers, a light jacket and comfortable shoes.
  • Spring and autumn: warm layers and a waterproof jacket.
  • Winter: a heavy coat, thermal layers, gloves and boots with grip.
