West Bengal stretches from the Himalaya to the Sundarbans, and costs vary by region. This guide breaks the cost down by component, explains what moves the price and shows where to save. We do not quote exact prices, which change by season; use it as a framework when you compare quotes.
Where the money goes
| Component | Share of the budget | What moves it |
|---|---|---|
| Hotels and heritage stays | Largest | Category, rajbari or tea estate, season |
| Getting there | Medium to large | Flights to Kolkata or Bagdogra, trains |
| Car and driver | Medium | Days outside Kolkata, hill transfers |
| Sundarbans boat trip | Medium | Boat, lodge, number of nights |
| Experiences | Small | Toy train, food walks, museums |
| Food | Small | Street food, sweets, restaurants |
Getting there
Kolkata has flights from every major city and fast trains from Delhi and elsewhere. Bagdogra serves Darjeeling and the hills, and overnight trains to New Jalpaiguri are good value. See our guide to reaching West Bengal.
Hotels and heritage stays
Kolkata has everything from guesthouses to grand heritage hotels. Restored rajbaris in the countryside and tea-estate bungalows near Darjeeling and Kurseong cost more but offer memorable stays. Darjeeling's Mall-area hotels fill in spring and autumn.
Kolkata on a budget
The Metro, including the stretch under the Hooghly, trams on a few routes, ferries and yellow taxis are cheap. The Victoria Memorial, the Indian Museum and Dakshineswar charge modest entry, and walks through College Street, Kumartuli and the flower market are free. Our Culinary and Cultural Delights of Kolkata focuses on food.
Car and driver
Outside Kolkata, a car and driver is the most comfortable way to reach Shantiniketan, Murshidabad and the rajbaris. In the hills, a driver from Bagdogra or Siliguri is essential; shared jeeps are cheaper for flexible travellers.
Darjeeling and the hills
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway joy ride, Tiger Hill at sunrise, tea-estate tours and the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute are moderately priced. Kalimpong and Kurseong are quieter and often better value than Darjeeling.
The Sundarbans
Guided boat trips of one or two nights include permits, meals and simple lodges. Higher-category boats and resorts cost more. Tiger sightings are rare, but the mangroves, birds and village life are the draw.
Food
Kolkata is one of India's great food cities: kathi rolls, phuchka, Bengali thalis, mishti doi and rosogolla, at low prices. Vegetarians eat well, with shukto, cholar dal and luchi. Fine dining and heritage restaurants cost more.
Durga Puja
Durga Puja brings pandals, lights and crowds. Hotels, flights and trains sell out months ahead, and taxis are scarce. Book early if you want the festival, or avoid those dates for better value.
How your route changes the cost
Kolkata with Shantiniketan or Murshidabad is good value. Adding Darjeeling adds a flight or overnight train and higher hotel costs, and the Sundarbans adds a boat trip.
How many days to budget for
Three nights in Kolkata, two for Murshidabad or a rajbari, and three to four for the hills make a full trip. Fewer bases reduce transport costs.
Heritage towns
Shantiniketan, Murshidabad, Bishnupur and the old European settlements along the Hooghly — Chandannagar, Chinsurah and Serampore — are good value. Entry to most sites is modest, and day trips by train cost little. A night in a restored rajbari adds a memorable, if pricier, stay.
Tea-estate stays
Staying on a working tea estate near Darjeeling or Kurseong, with garden walks, factory visits and tastings, is a highlight. Heritage bungalows with all meals cost considerably more than town hotels, so many travellers book one or two nights and spend the rest in Darjeeling or Kalimpong.
Combining with Sikkim
Many travellers continue from Darjeeling to Gangtok in Sikkim, about four hours by road. This adds hotels, a driver and permits for some high areas, but no long flights, as Bagdogra serves both.
Shopping
Tant and Baluchari saris, Murshidabad silk, terracotta from Bishnupur, Darjeeling tea and Kolkata's sweets are popular buys. Prices vary widely with quality, so buy from reputable shops, cooperatives or directly from weavers, and set a shopping budget in advance.
Cheaper ways to get around
Trains link Kolkata with Bolpur, Murshidabad and New Jalpaiguri cheaply, and shared jeeps run in the hills. In Kolkata, the Metro and ferries avoid traffic and cost little.
Budget, mid-range and luxury styles
| Style | Stays | Transport and experiences |
|---|---|---|
| Guesthouses and simple hotels | Trains, Metro, shared jeeps, street food | |
| Heritage hotels and rajbaris | Private car, Sundarbans boat, guided walks | |
| Luxury hotels and tea-estate bungalows | Flights, private car and guide, curated experiences |
How the season changes the bill
| Period | Prices | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Durga Puja (September or October) | Highest in Kolkata | Festive, crowded |
| October to March (other weeks) | High | Pleasant, winter fairs |
| March to May | High in the hills | Clear mountain views, hot plains |
| June to September | Lowest | Monsoon, landslides in the hills |
Package or do-it-yourself
A package makes the budget predictable and secures the stays, drivers and permits that sell out in peak weeks. Our Bengal Tapestry includes rajbari stays and a driver. When comparing, list what each option includes: stays and meals, transport, guides, entry tickets, permits and taxes.
Eight ways to bring the total down
- Avoid Durga Puja and New Year unless you want them.
- Use the Metro, ferries and trains.
- Stay in Kalimpong or Kurseong rather than central Darjeeling.
- Use shared jeeps in the hills.
- Eat street food and sweets.
- Choose one heritage night.
- Book overnight trains to New Jalpaiguri.
- Travel in shoulder months.
For families and parents
Families need larger vehicles in the hills and should avoid peak-hour Kolkata traffic. Parents may prefer flights to Bagdogra and hotels with lifts.
For couples and honeymooners
Couples often spend on a rajbari or tea-estate bungalow and save in Kolkata.
How to compare quotes
Line up offers item by item: nights in each place, hotel category and location, meals, vehicle size and driver allowances, hill transfers, Sundarbans boat category, guides, tickets and taxes. A lower price often means hotels far from the sights or a basic Sundarbans boat.
