A Rajasthan trip costs most in hotels — especially heritage palaces and havelis — and in a car and driver for the long distances between cities. Safaris, fort tickets and desert camps add the rest. Peak winter weeks and the Pushkar fair are the priciest. Here is how the budget breaks down.

A Rajasthan trip costs most in hotels — especially heritage palaces and havelis — and in a car and driver for the long distances between Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur and Jaisalmer. Ranthambore safaris, fort tickets, desert camps and guides add the rest. Mid-December to early January and the Pushkar fair are the priciest times; the hot months and monsoon are the cheapest.

Rajasthan can be travelled on almost any budget, from simple guesthouses to palace hotels. This guide breaks the cost down by component, explains what moves the price and shows where to save. We do not quote exact prices, which change by season; use this as a framework when you compare quotes.

Getting there

Jaipur, Udaipur and Jodhpur have flights from most metros, and fast trains link Delhi with Jaipur. An open-jaw route — into Jaipur and out of Udaipur — saves a long drive. Flights and trains fill quickly in December. See our guide to reaching Rajasthan.

Hotels

Rajasthan's heritage hotels — palaces, forts and havelis — are its signature. Lake-view rooms in Udaipur and palace hotels in Jaipur and Jodhpur are the most expensive. Havelis in Jaipur's old city, Mandawa and Jaisalmer, and modern hotels, offer good value. Desert camps near Jaisalmer range from simple to luxurious.

Car and driver

Distances in Rajasthan are long, so a private car and driver is often the largest transport cost. The quote should include fuel, the driver's allowance, tolls, parking and interstate taxes if you start in Delhi or Agra. Trains on long legs such as Jodhpur to Jaisalmer can reduce driving days.

Safaris

Ranthambore, Sariska and the leopard country of Jawai add memorable days. Permits for Ranthambore and Sariska are booked through official channels, with jeeps costing more than canters. Our Wild Trails and Royal Tales combines safaris with royal cities, and Soulmates in the Safari is a romantic Sariska stay.

Forts, palaces and guides

Entry tickets to Amber Fort, the City Palaces, Mehrangarh and Jaisalmer Fort are modest for Indian visitors, with some charging extra for cameras. A licensed guide adds context and costs little relative to the trip. Light-and-sound shows and folk dance evenings are inexpensive extras.

Shopping

Rajasthan is a shopper's state: block-printed textiles from Sanganer and Bagru, blue pottery and gemstones in Jaipur, leather juttis in Jodhpur, and miniature paintings in Udaipur. Set a shopping budget in advance, buy from government emporiums or trusted shops, and be wary of commission-based shopping stops suggested by touts.

Food

Rajasthani thalis, dal baati churma, kachoris and lassi are good value at local restaurants. Palace dining and rooftop restaurants in Udaipur cost more. Vegetarian and Jain food is widely available across the state. Food lovers can follow our Royal Flavours of Rajasthan.

Desert camps and experiences

A night in the Thar desert near Jaisalmer, with a camel or jeep ride to the dunes, folk music and dinner under the stars, is a highlight for many travellers. Camps range from simple tents to luxury camps with private bathrooms and heating in winter. Sam is the busiest dune area; Khuri and private dunes further out are quieter. Prices peak during the Desert Festival and in December.

How many days to budget for

Seven nights covers Jaipur, Udaipur and Jodhpur, or Jaipur, Ranthambore and Udaipur. Ten to twelve nights adds Jaisalmer and a slower pace. Because the car is often paid by the day, extra days add transport costs as well as hotels, so plan bases that reduce long drives and consider a train or flight on the longest legs.

Weddings and events

Rajasthan is a popular destination for weddings, especially in Udaipur and Jaipur during the winter wedding season. Large events can fill heritage hotels and raise prices on particular dates. Check event calendars when you fix dates, or book early if you want a specific palace hotel.

How your route changes the cost

A short trip around Jaipur and Ranthambore needs fewer driving days. Adding Udaipur and Jodhpur adds long drives, and Jaisalmer adds a desert camp night and a long return. Shekhawati's painted havelis around Mandawa are good value and close to Jaipur and Delhi.

Package or do-it-yourself

A package makes the budget predictable and secures heritage rooms and safari permits in peak season. When comparing, list what each option includes: stays, meals, car and driver, safaris, guides, entry tickets and taxes.

Eight ways to bring the total down

  1. Avoid the Christmas–New Year fortnight and fair dates.
  2. Mix one or two heritage nights with simpler hotels.
  3. Use trains on long legs.
  4. Fly in and out of different cities.
  5. Choose canter safaris or fewer drives.
  6. Eat thalis at local restaurants.
  7. Hire licensed guides only where you need them.
  8. Check the car quote includes allowances, tolls and taxes.

For families and parents

Families need larger vehicles and family rooms, which cost more; book early. Parents may prefer fewer hotel changes, lifts at forts where available and shorter driving days.

For couples and honeymooners

Couples often spend on a lake-view room in Udaipur or a luxury desert camp and save on other nights. Our Anopura, Jaipur stay suits a slower break.

How to compare quotes

Line up offers item by item: nights in each city, hotel type, meals, vehicle size and allowances, safari type, guides, tickets and taxes. A lower price often means modern hotels instead of heritage stays.

Your questions, answered

What is the biggest cost on a Rajasthan trip?

Hotels are usually the biggest cost, especially heritage palaces and havelis in Udaipur, Jaipur and Jodhpur. A car and driver for the long distances between cities comes next.

Is a heritage hotel worth the extra cost?

For many travellers, one or two nights in a palace or haveli hotel is the highlight of the trip. Mixing heritage stays with simpler hotels balances the budget.

How much do Ranthambore safaris add?

Safari permits are booked through official channels and priced per seat or per vehicle, with canters (larger open buses) cheaper than jeeps (gypsies). Several safaris over two days add significantly to a trip.

When is Rajasthan cheapest to visit?

April to September usually brings the lowest hotel prices, though April to June is very hot and the monsoon brings rain. Mid-December to early January and the Pushkar fair are the most expensive periods.
