Pattaya for Indian Travellers: Beyond the Reputation
- Pattaya
- Pattaya from India
- Thailand beach break
- Family travel
Pattaya is closer, easier and more family-friendly than its reputation suggests. Here is who it suits, where to stay, what is worth doing and how it fits a short Thailand trip from India.
Pattaya is a good choice for Indian travellers who want an easy, short beach break close to Bangkok — especially families and first-timers — provided you stay in Jomtien, Naklua or Wong Amat rather than central Pattaya. Two or three nights covers Coral Island, Nong Nooch Tropical Garden and the Sanctuary of Truth, and it pairs naturally with two or three nights in Bangkok.
Pattaya has a reputation, and it is not entirely undeserved: parts of the city revolve around nightlife. But the Pattaya most Indian families actually experience is a large seaside resort town with good-value hotels, water parks, gardens, shows and easy island trips, all under two hours from Bangkok's main airport.
Who Pattaya suits — and who it does not
| Pattaya suits | Consider elsewhere if |
|---|---|
| Families wanting attractions and easy logistics | You want quiet, natural beaches — look at Krabi or Koh Samui |
| First-timers on a 4–5 night trip with Bangkok | It is your honeymoon and you want seclusion |
| Groups of friends who like a lively evening | You dislike busy roads and crowded seafronts |
| Short breaks with no domestic flight | Clear water and snorkelling are your priority |
If you are torn between Pattaya and an island, our comparison of Phuket, Krabi and Koh Samui will help.
Getting to Pattaya from Bangkok
Pattaya sits about 120 kilometres south-east of Suvarnabhumi Airport. A private car or van typically takes one and a half to two hours, more in weekend traffic. Buses run from the airport and from Bangkok's Ekkamai bus terminal, and shared minivans are common.
For families with luggage, a private transfer from the airport straight to your Pattaya hotel is the simplest option, and it means you can go directly to the beach after landing and do Bangkok at the end of the trip — useful if your flight home leaves from Bangkok late at night.
Where to stay in Pattaya
- Jomtien — a long, calmer beach south of the centre. Good for families and longer stays, with plenty of restaurants.
- Naklua and Wong Amat — quieter, more upmarket stretch to the north, close to the Sanctuary of Truth. Good for couples and parents.
- Central Pattaya (Beach Road) — the busiest area, close to shopping and shows, and to Walking Street's nightlife. Convenient for groups of friends; less restful for families.
- Pratumnak Hill — between central Pattaya and Jomtien, with smaller beaches and good views.
Choose a hotel with a good pool: Pattaya's beaches are fine for a walk and a sunset, but most of the swimming happens at the hotel or on Coral Island.
What is genuinely worth doing in Pattaya
- Sanctuary of Truth — an extraordinary hand-carved wooden temple-like structure on the sea at Naklua, still under construction. Dress modestly and allow two hours.
- Nong Nooch Tropical Garden — vast landscaped gardens with cultural shows; excellent for families and parents, with trams to get around.
- Coral Island (Koh Larn) — the best beach day from Pattaya, covered below.
- Alcazar or Tiffany's cabaret — glamorous, family-friendly stage shows that many Indian visitors enjoy.
- Big Buddha Hill (Wat Phra Yai) — a short visit with views over the bay at sunset.
- Water parks — a good half-day for children, especially in the hot months.
- Floating market and night markets — touristy, but fun for an evening of snacks and shopping.
Elephant shows and wildlife attractions that use animals for performance or riding are best skipped. Choose observation-only experiences if animals are a priority.
Coral Island, done well
Koh Larn sits around 45 minutes by public ferry from Bali Hai Pier, or less by speedboat. The island's beaches — Tawaen, Samae, Tien — are cleaner and clearer than Pattaya's own.
- Go early. The first ferries arrive before the tour boats; by late morning, Tawaen is crowded.
- Choose Samae or Tien beach for a calmer day than Tawaen.
- Be careful with water sports. Check life jackets, agree prices in writing and photograph jet skis before use to avoid damage disputes.
- Carry cash and water, and keep the return ferry time in mind.
Food in Pattaya for Indian travellers
Pattaya is one of the easiest places in Thailand to eat Indian food: dozens of Indian restaurants line Beach Road, Second Road and Jomtien, many serving pure-vegetarian and Jain meals on request. Seafood dominates local menus, so vegetarians should ask about fish sauce and oyster sauce in Thai dishes — our vegetarian and Jain food guide has the phrases you need.
How long to stay, and how to combine it
Two or three nights in Pattaya is right for most travellers. More than that and you may start to feel you have seen it. The classic first-trip shape is three nights in Pattaya and two or three in Bangkok — see our 7-day Thailand itineraries for how this compares with island routes.
Our 3-night Pattaya beach break follows exactly this logic: private van from Suvarnabhumi, a Coral Island day with the Alcazar show in the evening, Nong Nooch on day three and a relaxed return to Bangkok. Pair it with Bangkok nights for a complete first trip, and see things to do in Bangkok for that half.
Evenings in Pattaya
Pattaya's evenings are what most people picture, but there is a lot more than Walking Street. Families and couples tend to enjoy:
- A cabaret show at Alcazar or Tiffany's, early in the evening.
- Night markets such as Thepprasit for snacks, clothes and souvenirs.
- Sunset at Pratumnak Hill or Big Buddha Hill, looking across the bay.
- A seafront dinner in Jomtien or Naklua, quieter than Beach Road.
Walking Street is a nightlife district with bars and clubs. It is not a place for children, and adults should keep an eye on drinks and bills.
Safety and scams in Pattaya
- Jet-ski damage claims are the best-known scam: photograph the machine before you ride, or skip it.
- Baht bus (songthaew) fares are cheap on fixed routes but can be inflated for private trips; agree the price first.
- Bills at bars should be checked line by line before you pay.
- Road safety matters more than crime: Beach Road and Second Road are busy, and scooter accidents are common.
Keep the tourist police number, 1155, saved in your phone. It connects to English-speaking officers.
Used sensibly, Pattaya is a relaxed, good-value seaside break, and an easy first taste of Thailand for families. Most problems come from late nights in the busiest streets, not from the town as a whole.
